A-League (American)
A-League Men (known as the Isuzu UTE A-League for sponsorship reasons) is the highest-level professional men's soccer league in Australia and New Zealand. At the top of the Australian league system, it is the country's premier men's competition for the sport. A-League Men was established in 2004 as the A-League by the Football Federation Australia (FFA) as a successor to the National Soccer League (NSL) and competition commenced in August 2005. The league is currently are administered by the Australian Professional Leagues (APL), contested by twelve teams; eleven based in Australia and one based in New Zealand. The men's, women's and youth leagues have now been brought together under a unified A-Leagues banner. Seasons run from October to May and include a 26-round regular season followed by a Finals Series playoff involving the six highest-placed teams, culminating in a grand final match. Atlanta Silverbacks
The Atlanta Silverbacks FC were an American professional soccer club based in Atlanta, Georgia. Founded in 1998 as Atlanta Ruckus, the club played in many leagues over the years before folding after the 2015 season. The team played its home games at Atlanta Silverbacks Park, a large soccer complex featuring a 5,000-seat soccer-specific stadium in Atlanta, 15 miles northeast of downtown. The team's colors were red, black, grey, and white. The club had 2 independent supporter groups, Westside 109 and the Atlanta Ultras. The Ultras were established in 2011 & were known to support both the Silverbacks men's and women's side. The Ultras were also to be known for their fanatical support at Silverbacks Park, as well as away matches. They had a reputation for their unfriendly or challenging attitude towards fans from opposing clubs. Lars Lyssand
Lars Lyssand is a retired American soccer player who played professionally in the USL First Division. Born to a Norwegian immigrant father and a Swedish immigrant mother, Lyssand grew up in Northern California. He graduated from Woodside High School where he was a three-sport athlete – soccer, football and baseball. Lyssand attended San Jose State University, playing on the men’s soccer team from 1998 to 2001, and was the 2001 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Year. In February 2002, the San Jose Earthquakes selected Lyssand with the last pick (70th overall) of the 2002 MLS SuperDraft. Although he appeared as a guest player in an August 2002 game against America, Lyssand never played for the Earthquakes during the MLS season. Temoc Suarez
Cuauhtemoc “Temoc” Suarez (born April 19, 1975 in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina) is a retired American soccer player who spent three seasons in Major League Soccer, two in the National Professional Soccer League and five in the USL First Division. Suarez played for the United States Under-17 national team and also for the national futsal squad. Youth Suarez grew up in South Carolina, attending Bishop England High School in Charleston where he was a Parade Magazine high school All American. In 1991, he was selected for the U.S. U-17 national team which qualified for the 1991 FIFA U-17 World Championship. Suarez and his teammates finished 3-0 in group play, but fell in the second round to Qatar in penalty kicks after the two teams played to a 1–1 tie. Michael Burke (soccer)
Michael Burke (born February 25, 1977) is a retired American soccer player. Career College and Amateur Burke attended Loyola University Maryland, playing two seasons of college soccer. In 1997, he left college early for personal reasons. His professional soccer career started in his hometown of Jacksonville, FL. He spent time with Deportivo Cali in Colombia and Nottingham Forest in England. Professional Burke began his professional career in 1998 when he signed with the Jacksonville Cyclones of the A-League. Late in the season, Michael Burke asked to be released to pursue other teams. After Burke sat out for a week of training, the club agreed to trade him to the Charleston Battery and Burke was named the 1998 USL A-League Rookie of the Year. Tim Brown (footballer)
Tim Brown (born 6 March 1981) is a New Zealand former professional footballer and entrepreneur. He is the co-founder of footwear company Allbirds. Brown was one of seven foundation players of the Wellington Phoenix, being signed in 2007 for the club's inaugural season in the A-League. Brown was known for his high work rate as a box-to-box midfielder, often making trademark late runs into the penalty box where he scored most of his goals. Penalty Shoot-out (association Football)
A penalty shoot-out (officially kicks from the penalty mark) is a tie-breaking method in association football to determine which team is awarded victory in a match that cannot end in a draw, when the score is tied after the normal time as well as extra time (if used) have expired. In a penalty shoot-out, each team takes turns shooting at goal from the penalty mark, with the goal defended only by the opposing team's goalkeeper. Each team has five shots which must be taken by different kickers; the team that makes more successful kicks is declared the victor. Shoot-outs finish as soon as one team has an insurmountable lead. If scores are level after five pairs of shots, the shootout progresses into additional " sudden-death" rounds. Balls successfully kicked into the goal during a shoot-out do not count as goals for the individual kickers or the team, and are tallied separately from the goals scored during normal play (including extra time, if any). Overtime (sports)
Overtime or extra time is an additional period of play specified under the rules of a sport to bring a game to a decision and avoid declaring the match a tie or draw where the scores are the same. In some sports, this extra period is played only if the game is required to have a clear winner, as in single-elimination tournaments where only one team or players can advance to the next round or win the tournament. The rules of overtime or extra time vary between sports and even different competitions. Some may employ " sudden death", where the first player or team who scores immediately wins the game.
