2003–04 FC Basel Season
The 2003–04 season was Fussball Club Basel 1893's 111th in existence and the club's 10th consecutive season in the Nationalliga A, the top flight of Swiss football. Basel played their home games in the newly constructed St. Jakob-Park complex. Local businessman Werner Edelmann was the club's chairman for the second consecutive season. The Club's main aims for the 2003–04 season were to regain the league title and, as cup holders, to retain their cup title. The third aim was to remain in the UEFA Cup as long as possible. During pre-season Basel won the Uhrencup and the Alpen Cup. After being the surprise package in Europe in the 2002–03 season, Basel could not bring this form into the UEFA Cup in 2003–04 as they were eliminated by Newcastle United in the second round after defeating Malatyaspor in the previous round. FC Basel
Fussball Club Basel 1893, widely known as FC Basel, FCB, or just Basel, is a Swiss football club based in Basel, in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. Formed in 1893, the club has been Swiss national champions 20 times, Swiss Cup winners 13 times, and Swiss League Cup winners once. Basel have competed in European competitions every season since 1999–2000. They have qualified for the Group stages of the Champions League more times than any other Swiss club – a total of seven times – and are the only Swiss club to have ever qualified to the Group stages directly. David Degen
David Degen (born 15 February 1983 in Liestal) is a former Swiss footballer who last played for FC Basel, mostly as a right midfielder, in the Swiss Super League. He is half Dutch as his mother is from the Netherlands. His twin brother Philipp Degen was also a professional football player. Club career Degen started his youth football with local club FC Oberdorf. In 1996, he transferred to the youth teams of FC Basel playing in their U-18 and U-21 teams. He started his professional career at FC Aarau in 2000 but returned to Basel in 2003. With the club, during the Super League season 2003–04 and 2004–05, Degen won two domestic League Titels. German Bundesliga
The Bundesliga (; ), sometimes referred to as the Fußball-Bundesliga () or 1. Bundesliga (), is a professional association football league in Germany. The Challenge League is the second-highest tier of the Swiss football league system and lower of two professional leagues in the country. Vahid Halilhodžić
Vahid Halilhodžić (; born 15 October 1952) is a Bosnian professional football manager and former player. He is regarded as one of the most controversially successful Bosnian football managers, due to his successful tenure in coaching various national teams yet having problematic relations with his teams and players due to different approaches. Regarded as one of the best Yugoslav players, Halilhodžić had successful playing spells with Velež Mostar and French clubs Nantes and Paris Saint-Germain before retiring in 1987. During that time, he earned 15 full international caps for Yugoslavia and was part of national squads who won the 1978 European Under-21 Championship and played at the 1982 FIFA World Cup. Hakan Yakin ( tr, Hakan Yakın; born 22 February 1977) is a Swiss football coach and a former player who played as a forward or midfielder. He is the manager of Schaffhausen. He was a member of the Swiss national team for eleven years. Early and personal life Yakin was born in Basel, Switzerland, to Turkish parents. Carlos Vila Varela (born 15 September 1977) is a Spanish former footballer who played as a midfielder. He spent almost his entire football career in Switzerland. Career Early years Born in Geneva, Switzerland, Varela played his youth football with local amateur club FC Vernier as he was scouted by Servette and he joined their youth department in 1993. He advanced from their M-17 team straight in to their first team, who played in the Swiss National League A, in the summer of 1995. As 18-year-old he only had two appearances in the 1995–96 Nationalliga A that season, but he also had appearances for their U-21 team. Bernt Haas (born 8 April 1978) is a former Swiss football defender. Career Haas was born in Vienna, Austria. He began his career at Grasshoppers Zurich, where he played for several seasons before moving to England to join Premier League club Sunderland in August 2001. Despite making 27 appearances for the club in 2001–02, he did not play for Sunderland during the following season and was loaned out to FC Basel. Haas joined West Bromwich Albion in 2003, and was a regular at right-back as Albion were promoted back to the Premier League.
