2003 World Championships In Athletics – Men's 1500 Metres
These are the official results of the Men's 1500 metres event at the 2003 IAAF World Championships in Paris, France. There were a total number of 29 participating athletes, with three qualifying heats, two semi-finals and the final held on Wednesday 27 August 2003 at 21:00h. With all eyes on the world record holder Hicham El Guerrouj, the final started with home team favorite Mehdi Baala taking the lead off the line though he was Reyes Estévez uncharacteristically took the lead and began pushing the pace a half lap into the race. As soon as Estévez began to create some daylight, El Guerrouj covered the move through a 57.70 first lap, but after letting Estévez lead a whole lap El Guerrouj edged ahead. It was 1:56.29 (58.59) after 2 laps with Baala the first to follow El Guerrouj, with Paul Korir and Estévez in such close order drill that Korir stumbled from catching Estévez' legs and losing ground. Vyacheslav Vasilyevich Shabunin (russian: Вячеслав Васильевич Шабунин) (born 27 September 1969 in Kamyshlov, Sverdlovsk Oblast) is a Russian middle distance runner who specializes in the 1500 metres. Jason Lunn
Jason Lunn (born September 19, 1974) is an American retired middle-distance runner who mostly competed in the 1500 meters. He was born in Boulder, Colorado. Lunn was the US outdoor champion at 1500m in 2003. He represented his country at one outdoor and three indoor World Championships. He earned All-American honors for Stanford University in cross country in 1997, and multiple times in track and field. He is now an assistant professor at Penn State University. Adrian Blincoe (born 4 November 1979 in Auckland) is a New Zealand middle-distance runner. In July 2008 he set the List of New Zealand records in athletics, New Zealand record in the 5000m, running 13:10.19. Michael East (athlete)
Michael John East (born 20 January 1978 in Reading, England) is a retired middle-distance athlete. His best result came in winning the 1500 metres gold medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England. He was the last British male to win a major 1500m title until Jake Wightman became World Champion in 2022. He has also had some success in the IAAF European Cup finishing second and third in 2002 and 2003 respectively at the same distance. He nearly added to his medal tally when finishing third at the 2004 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Budapest, Hungary only to find himself disqualified for interfering with the run of the Kenyan Laban Rotich. Kevin Sullivan (born March 20, 1974) is the men's head cross country and distance coach at University of Michigan and former middle-distance runner from Canada. He was born in Brantford, Ontario. Personal life Sullivan studied civil engineering at the University of Michigan where he had 14 All-American honours and won 4 NCAA titles (one relay and 3 individual).
