2003 AF2 Season
The 2003 AF2 season was the fourth season of the AF2. It was preceded by 2002 and succeeded by 2004. The league champions were the Tulsa Talons, who defeated the Macon Knights in ArenaCup IV. For the first time ever, AF2 uses the six-division alignment (three divisions per conference). Arena Football
Indoor American football, or arena football, is a variation of gridiron football played at ice hockey-sized indoor arenas. While varying in details from league to league, the rules of indoor football are designed to allow for play in a smaller arena. Rochester Brigade
The Rochester Brigade was a professional arena football team based in Rochester, New York. The team was a member of af2, the minor league of the Arena Football League, and played their home games at the Blue Cross Arena. The Brigade began play in 2001 and ceased operations following the 2003 season. The city of Rochester would be without an arena football team until 2006, with the arrival of the GLIFL's Rochester Raiders. History The Rochester Brigade was one of 13 af2 expansion teams established prior to the 2001 season. The team was owned by Mark Hamister, who also owned the Buffalo Destroyers of the Arena Football League, and played their home games at the Blue Cross Arena in downtown Rochester, New York. San Diego Riptide
The San Diego Riptide was a professional arena football team based in San Diego, California. The team played its home games at the San Diego Sports Arena. The team was originally coached by Cree Morris, then Mouse Davis and finally by Sean Ponder. The Riptide never officially announced that it had ceased operations, but never came back from its hiatus after the 2005 season, and the AF2 folded into the AFL following the latter's 2009 bankruptcy. Wichita Stealth
The Wichita Stealth was an arena football team. They played their home games at the Kansas Coliseum in Wichita, Kansas. They originally began play in the original incarnation of the Indoor Football League as a 2000 expansion team known as the Wichita Warlords before the league folded, in which they moved to the AF2 and became the Stealth. They only got to the playoffs once during their five-year existence, where they had an early exit (courtesy of the Hawaiian Islanders). After an 8-8 season in 2004, the team officially disbanded and ceased all operations. After Intrust Bank Arena opened, there were rumors that the Stealth might be reincarnated, but the talks died down, and nothing ever surfaced. Central Valley Coyotes
The Central Valley Coyotes were a professional arena football team and were a charter member of the AF2. As the newly forming AF2 set aside its plans for a two tier league and began focusing only on bigger markets, Central Valley stepped down and tried to play in a league which was more friendly to smaller markets; such as the Indoor Football League or the American Indoor Football Association. The team began as a 2002 expansion member of the af2, known as the original Bakersfield Blitz until 2004. They played their home games at Selland Arena in Fresno, California (With the exception of two home games during the 2008 season which were played at the Save Mart Center due to construction). The Central Valley Coyotes were in discussions with Indoor Football League Commissioner Tommy Benezio about possibly joining the Indoor Football League in 2011. Hawaiian Islanders
The Hawaiian Islanders were a minor league team of the Arena Football League's developmental league, the AF2. Based in Honolulu, Hawaii, the Hawaiian Islanders home field was at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center Arena. It competed in the AF2 National Conference West. They were owned by Charles Wang, who also owned the New York Islanders and the AFL's New York Dragons. The Islanders were an affiliate of the Dragons, along with the short-lived New Haven Ninjas. The team existed from 2002 to 2004. The Islanders were coached by Guy Benjamin and Chad Carlson in 2002. In 2003, they were coached by Cal Lee, who had been coaching high school football at Hawaii's St. Louis School for the past 20 seasons. Fullback Josh White played with the Islanders before playing in the AFL. The team disbanded after the 2004 season. Green Bay Blizzard

The Peoria Pirates were a professional arena football team that last played in AF2, the minor league to the Arena Football League (AFL). They played their home games at Carver Arena, part of the Peoria Civic Center in Illinois, and were coached by Mike Hohensee and Bruce Cowdrey. The Pirates originally began play as a charter member of the original Indoor Football League in 1999. Louisville Fire
The Louisville Fire was an arena football team that played its home games at the Brown-Forman Field in Freedom Hall in Louisville, Kentucky. They were a 2001 expansion team of the af2. Their owner/operator was former Pro Bowl lineman and Louisville native Will Wolford. The team was somewhat successful. After a rocky first few seasons they finally found success in 2004 and then made it all the way to the Arena Cup in the 2005 season. On December 19, 2001, Jeff Brohm was named the head coach of the Louisville Fire arena football team. The Fire started the 0–7 before they defeated the Carolina Rhinos 31–28 to improve to 1–7. Cincinnati Swarm
The Cincinnati Swarm was a professional arena football franchise based in Cincinnati, Ohio. They were members of the Midwest Division of the National Conference of the af2. The Swarm joined the af2 as an expansion franchise in 2003 along with the Green Bay Blizzard. In 2003, the Swarm went 7–9, second in the Midwest Division. Despite their modest record, and finishing second in their division, they failed to make the playoffs. Cincinnati's attempt at arena football failed, and the Swarm folded after one year due to poor attendance. Ten years earlier, Cincinnati was home to the Cincinnati Rockers from 1992 to 1993, and like the Swarm, they folded shortly after their inception. Memphis Xplorers
The Memphis Xplorers were a professional arena football team. They were a 2001 expansion member of the af2. They played their home games at DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven, Mississippi (a suburb of Memphis, Tennessee). The team's logo featured the likeness of the namesake of both the venue and the team, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto. On October 11, 2006, the team announced that they would not return for the 2007 season. In October 2007, local teacher Patrick Smith and a partner purchased the Memphis Xplorers for $100,000. There were plans to bring the team back for the 2009 season, with the possibility of the team's name being changed to the Midsouth Mafia. These plans never came to fruition.
