2002 IAAF World Cross Country Championships
The 2002 IAAF World Cross Country Championships took place on March 23/24, 2002. The races were held at the Leopardstown Racecourse, Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown, near Dublin, Ireland. Athletics was contested from October 7 to October 14 at the 2002 Asian Games in Busan Asiad Main Stadium, Busan, South Korea. A total of 459 athletes from 39 nations took part in the competition. Athletics At The 2002 Commonwealth Games
At the 2002 Commonwealth Games, the athletics events were held at the City of Manchester Stadium on 26–30 July 2002. The route for the marathon event crossed Manchester city centre and finished in the stadium. The race walk events began alongside the Lowry Centre at Salford Quays. There were twenty-five men's events and 23 women's events; the schedules were identical except that there were men's 3000 metres steeplechase and 50 kilometres walk events. Pole vaulter Dominic Johnson won a bronze medal, Saint Lucia's only medal of the Games. Sixteen Games records were bettered over the course of the competition, and two further records were set in the disability events. 2002 IAAF Golden League
The 2002 IAAF Golden League was the fifth edition of the annual international track and field meeting series, held from 28 June to 6 September. It was contested at seven European meetings: the Bislett Games, Meeting Gaz de France, Golden Gala, Herculis, Weltklasse Zürich, Memorial Van Damme and the Internationales Stadionfest (ISTAF). The Golden League jackpot consisted of one million US dollars' worth of gold bars. The jackpot was available to athletes who won all seven competitions of the series in one of the twelve specified events (divided equally between the sexes) and participated at the 2002 IAAF Grand Prix Final. The jackpot events for 2002 were: 100 metres for men and women, women's 400 metres, 1500 metres for men and women, 3000 metres/5000 metres for men and women, women's 100 metres hurdles, men's 400 metres hurdles, men's pole vault, men's triple jump and women's javelin throw. 2002 IAAF Grand Prix Final
The 2002 IAAF Grand Prix Final was the eighteenth edition of the season-ending competition for the IAAF Grand Prix track and field circuit, organised by the International Association of Athletics Federations. It was held on 14 September at the Stade Sébastien Charléty in Paris, France. Paris became the third city to host the event for a second time, following Rome and Fontvieille. Hicham El Guerrouj (1500 metres) and Marion Jones (100 metres) were the overall points winners of the tournament. Both athletes took their second career win in the series, El Guerrouj becoming the third man to achieve the feat and Jones the second woman. A total of 18 athletics events were contested, ten for men and eight for women.
