Tennis
Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. The object of the game is to manoeuvre the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return. The player who is unable to return the ball validly will not gain a point, while the opposite player will. Tennis is an Olympic sport and is played at all levels of society and at all ages. The sport can be played by anyone who can hold a racket, including wheelchair users. The modern game of tennis originated in Birmingham, England, in the late 19th century as lawn tennis. Mark Woodforde
Mark Raymond Woodforde, OAM (born 23 September 1965) is a former professional tennis player from Australia. He is best known as one half of "The Woodies", a doubles partnership with Todd Woodbridge. Woodforde was born in Adelaide, and joined the men's professional tennis ATP Tour in 1984. Woodforde won four singles titles, including his hometown Adelaide tournament twice. His best singles result in a Grand Slam was reaching the semi-final of the Australian Open in 1996, his 38th Grand Slam singles tournament, which remains a record for the longest time taken to reach a maiden semi-final. Woodforde is best known for his doubles success, having won twelve Grand Slam doubles titles in his career – one French Open, two Australian Opens, three US Opens, and a record six Wimbledons. 2000 French Open – Men's Doubles
Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde defeated Paul Haarhuis and Sandon Stolle in the final, 7–6(9–7), 6–4 to win the men's doubles tennis title at the 2000 French Open. With the win, the Woodies completed the career Grand Slam and the career Super Slam. Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes were the defending champions, but competed with different partners. Bhupathi played alongside David Prinosil, but lost to Juan Ignacio Carrasco and Jairo Velasco Jr. in the second round. Magnus Norman
Magnus Norman (born 30 May 1976) is a Swedish tennis coach and retired professional tennis player. He reached a career-high Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) world No. 2 singles ranking on June 12, 2000. His career highlights include reaching a Grand Slam final at the French Open in 2000 (lost to Gustavo Kuerten), and winning an ATP Masters Series title at the 2000 Rome Masters (defeated Kuerten in the final). Norman owns the Good to Great Tennis Academy. Among its students are Stan Wawrinka, Gaël Monfils, and Grigor Dimitrov. Gustavo "Guga" Kuerten (; born 10 September 1976) is a Brazilian former world No. 1 tennis player. He won the French Open singles title three times ( 1997, 2000, and 2001), and was the Tennis Masters Cup champion in 2000. During his career he won 20 singles and 8 doubles titles. Kuerten suffered many problems with injuries which resulted in his non-attendances at many tournaments in 2002 and between 2004 and 2008. French Open
The French Open (french: Internationaux de France de tennis), also known as Roland-Garros (), is a major tennis tournament held over two weeks at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France, beginning in late May each year. The tournament and venue are named after the French aviator Roland Garros. Todd Woodbridge
Todd Andrew Woodbridge, OAM (born 2 April 1971) is an Australian former professional tennis player and current sports broadcaster with the Nine Network. Woodbridge is best known for his successful Doubles partnerships with Mark Woodforde (nicknamed "The Woodies") and later Jonas Björkman. He is among the most successful doubles players of all time, having won 16 Grand Slam men's doubles titles (nine Wimbledons, three US Opens, three Australian Opens and one French Open), and a further six Grand Slam mixed doubles titles (three US Opens, one French Open, one Wimbledon, one Australian Open). Aránzazu Isabel María "Arantxa" Sánchez Vicario (; born 18 December 1971) is a Spanish former List of WTA number 1 ranked singles tennis players, world No. 1 tennis player. Jared Palmer
Jared Eiseley Palmer (born July 2, 1971) is a professional tennis player who won 28 professional doubles titles (Including his wins at the Australian Open and Wimbledon) and one singles title in his career on the ATP Tour. He also won four double titles on the challenger's circuit (two in 1992 and two in 1993). Palmer turned professional in 1991 after winning the 1991 NCAA Division 1 singles title as a sophomore playing for Stanford University. 2000 Australian Open – Mixed Doubles
Rennae Stubbs and Jared Palmer defeated 1993 champions Arantxa Sánchez Vicario and Todd Woodbridge in the final, 7–5, 7–6(7–3), to win the mixed doubles tennis title at the 2000 Australian Open. By winning the title, Stubbs won her second Grand Slam title, after she won her first in Women's Doubles earlier in the week, and Palmer won his first major Mixed Doubles title. Mariaan de Swardt and David Adams were the defending champions, but De Swardt chose not to defend her title and Adams played with Kristie Boogert.
