The 2000 Mexx Benelux Open was a women's tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts in Antwerp, Belgium that was part of the Tier IV category of the 2000 WTA Tour. It was the seventh edition of the tournament and was held from 15 May until 21 May 2000. First-seeded Amanda Coetzer won the singles title and the accompanying $22,000 first-prize money. WTA Tier IV Tournaments
The WTA Tier IV tournaments were Women's Tennis Association fourth-level tournaments held from 1990 until the end of the 2008 season. The line-up of events varied over the years, with tournaments being promoted, demoted or cancelled. Some of the tournaments became Tier V events between 1990 and 1992, and later from 2001 to 2005, before being integrated back into Tier IV. Clay Court
A clay court is one of the types of tennis court on which the sport of tennis, originally known as "lawn tennis", is played. Clay courts are made of crushed stone, brick, shale, or other unbound mineral aggregate depending on the tournament. The French Open uses clay courts, the only Grand Slam tournament to do so. Clay courts are more common in Continental Europe and Latin America than in North America, Asia-Pacific or Britain. Two main types exist: red clay, the more common variety, and green clay, also known as "rubico", which is a harder surface. Amanda Coetzer
Amanda Coetzer (born 22 October 1971, in Hoopstad) is a South African former professional tennis player. Coetzer finished in the WTA rankings top 20 for ten consecutive seasons (1992–2001), peaking at world No. 3. She reached three Grand Slam semifinals (Australian Open 1996 and 1997, French Open 1997) and one Grand Slam doubles final ( US Open 1993). Coetzer earned a reputation for regularly beating players who were ranked higher than her. Sabine Appelmans (born 22 April 1972) is a former professional tennis player from Belgium. She was Belgium's Fed Cup captain from 2007 until 2011. Career Appelmans started playing at the neighbour's court at the age of seven. Her first trainer, Fred Debruyn, saw immediately that she was very talented. Although right-handed, she played left-handed; at a children's tennis training session she claimed to be left-handed so she could stay with her friend in the left-handed group. Jennifer Dent (born February 10, 1981, as Jennifer Hopkins) is an American former professional tennis player. She won seven singles titles on the ITF Women's Circuit in her career and nearly cracked the top 50. In 2001, she reached her only WTA Tour singles final in Hobart (which she lost to Italian Rita Grande). Petra Rampre (born 20 January 1980) is a Slovenian former professional tennis player. In her career, she won eight singles and five doubles titles on the ITF Circuit. On 30 April 2012, she reached her best singles ranking of world No. 151. On 20 November 2000, she peaked at No. 84 in the WTA doubles rankings.
