2000 IIHF World Championship
The 2000 IIHF World Championship was held in Saint Petersburg, Russia from 29 April to 14 May. Qualification This was the final year for qualifying rounds (except 'Far East'). Five teams advanced out of the eight that participated in the two European groups. The top two from each group played in the World Championship, and the third place teams played off against each other for the final spot. Both groups were played 11–14 November 1999. Ice Palace (arena)
The Ice Palace (Russian: Ледовый Дворец, ''Ledovy Dvorets'') is an arena in Saint Petersburg, Russia. It was built for the 2000 IIHF World Championship and opened in 2000. It holds 12,300 people. The Ice Palace is primarily used for ice hockey and is the home arena for SKA Saint Petersburg. It hosted the IIHF European Champions Cup in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. It is also used for concerts, exhibitions and as a skating rink. Oleksiy Mykolaiovych "Alexei" Zhitnik ( uk, Олексій Миколайович Житник, russian: Алексей Николаевич Житник; born October 10, 1972) is a Ukrainian former professional ice hockey defenceman. Zhitnik has played more games in the National Hockey League (NHL) (1,085) than any other Ukrainian born defenceman. He has represented the Soviet Union, Commonwealth of Independent States, CIS, and Russia internationally. His number, 13, has been honored by Sokil Kyiv. Pavel Vladimirovich Bure (russian: Па́вел Влади́мирович Буре́, ; born March 31, 1971) is a Russian former professional ice hockey player who played the right wing position. Nicknamed "the Russian Rocket" for his speed, Bure played for 12 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Vancouver Canucks, Florida Panthers and New York Rangers. Alexei Nikolaevich Kudashov (russian: Алексей Николаевич Кудашов; born July 21, 1971) is a Russian former professional ice hockey Forward (ice hockey), forward and current head coach for HC Dynamo Moscow of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). Playing career Kudashov was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1991 and played 25 games for the Leafs during the 1993–94 NHL season. Viktor Nikolayevich Kozlov (russian: Виктор Николаевич Козлов; born 14 February 1975) is a Russian former professional ice hockey center and coach. He is the current head coach of the Kontinental Hockey League's Salavat Yulaev Ufa. Playing career Kozlov was drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the first round as the sixth overall selection in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft. Oleg Viktorovich Petrov (''Олег Викторович Петров''; born April 18, 1971) is a Russian former ice hockey right winger. He played in the National Hockey League (NHL) between 1992 and 2003. Professional career Petrov was drafted 127th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft and became the first Russian to play for the team. He played in 382 career NHL games, scoring 72 goals and 115 assists for 187 points. The most goals he ever scored in a single season in the NHL was 24 and the most points he ever achieved was 47. Alexander Yevgenievich Kharitonov (russian: Александр Евгеньевич Харитонов, born March 30, 1976) is a Russian former professional ice hockey right wing. Career Kharitonov was drafted in the third round, 81st overall, by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft from HC Dynamo Moscow at the age of 24. Andrei Viktorovich Markov (russian: Андрей Викторович Марков; born 20 December 1978) is a Russian-Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman. Nicknamed "the General", Markov formerly played from 2000 to 2017 with the Montreal Canadiens of the National Hockey League (NHL). He holds both Russian and Canadian citizenship.
