2000 European Men's Handball Championship
The 2000 European Men's Handball Championship was the fourth edition of the tournament and was held in Croatia from 21 to 30 January 2000, in the cities of Zagreb and Rijeka. Oleg Velyky ( uk, Олег Великий, ''Oleh Welykyj'') (14 October 1977 – 23 January 2010) was a Ukrainian and German handball player. He was a World champion 2007 with the German national team (he was on the team roster, but did not play because of an injury). Velyky was born in Brovary, Ukraine. Irfan "Pipe" Smajlagić (born 16 October 1961) is a Bosnian-born Croatian former handball player and current coach, who competed in the 1988 Summer Olympics for Yugoslavia and in the 1996 Summer Olympics for Croatia. Born in Meersburg, he is a member of the German national handball team since 1994, making his debut against the Moroccan national handball team on 4 August in Balingen. Bertrand Fabien Gille (born 24 March 1978 in Valence, Drôme) is a handball player from France. Very strong physically (1.87m, 98 kg), and was honored with the title of World Player of the Year in 2002. His career as a handball player started very early: in 1984, he played for HBC Loriol and followed sport étude as a scholastic path. From 1996 to 2002, he played for Chambéry SH (under the guidance of Philippe Gardent, another famous French handball player) before joining the German club HSV Hamburg.
