20,000 Leagues Across the Land (french: Vingt mille lieues sur la terre or "Léon Garros Is Looking for His Friend", russian: Леон Гаррос ищет друга) is a 1961 Soviet-French feature film by Marcello Pagliero. Plot During the Second World War Leon Garros and Boris Vaganov escape from a Nazi concentration camp. After 15 years as a journalist Leon with buddies visits the Soviet Union to make a report and accidentally finds Boris. But Boris is not in Moscow, and for the sake of meeting a friend Leon has to take a car halfway across the country... Traveling with the foreigners is translator Nikolai, who in turn is looking for Natasha, his brother's runaway bride. Marcello Pagliero
Marcello Pagliero (15 January 1907 – 18 October 1980) was an Italian film director, actor, and screenwriter. Pagliero was born in London and died in Paris. He is perhaps best known for his performance in the Roberto Rossellini film ''Rome, Open City'' (1945). He moved to France in 1947, and continued to work in film until 1960 and in French television after that. In 1949, he was nominated with six other co-writers for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for the Rossellini film ''Paisan''. Vladimir Sergeyevich Ivashov (russian: Влади́мир Серге́евич Ивашо́в; 28 August 1939 — 23 March 1995) was a Soviet and Russian actor. Biography He had a film career that spanned over 30 years. He is best known for his role as Pvt. Alyosha Skvortsov in '' Ballad of a Soldier'' which he starred in with Zhanna Prokhorenko in 1959. The film was awarded the Moscow International Film Festival award in 1960. It also won the Lenin Award. The film was kept in the film hall of The Kremlin to be shown to foreign guests. Ivashov died in Moscow, Russia on 23 March 1995 of acute gastric ulcer at the age of 55. Asteroid 12978 Ivashov, discovered by Lyudmila Zhuravleva in 1978, was named in his memory.
