2 Marsham Street is an office building on Marsham Street in the City of Westminster, London, and headquarters of the Home Office and Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities (and its predecessor bodies), departments of the British Government, since March 2005. Before this date the Home Office was located at 50 Queen Anne's Gate. It has also housed the headquarters of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs since 2018. History The site was previously occupied by the Departments of Environment (DoE) and Transport (DfT). The headquarters offices of both departments were located in Marsham Towers - three 20-floor concrete towers (North, Centre and South) joined together by 'podium' floors to level 3. The towers won an architectural award, and boasted express lifts, marble entrances and escalators to the third floor - very modern government offices for the early 1970s. Marsham Towers
The Marsham Towers were three towers at the corner of Marsham Street and Great Peter Street in Westminster, London. They served as the headquarters of the Department of the Environment. Redevelopment The redevelopment of the site was long planned. The site was originally a gas works and had first included two gas holders (built 1875), renovated in World War 2 for use as bomb shelter 'citadels' - the North Rotunda and the South Rotunda. A new ' steel-framed building' was also added in 1940–41. Both rotundas were designed to survive the impact of a 500 lb bomb and had concrete roofs. In 1943 the lowest level of the North Rotunda (codenamed ''Anson'') was kitted out as the reserve to the Cabinet War Rooms. The previous reserve Paddock in Dollis Hill was seen to be unsatisfactory and too far from Whitehall. Sir Terence Farrell (born 12 May 1938), known as Terry Farrell, is a British architect and urban designer. In 1980, after working for 15 years in partnership with Sir Nicholas Grimshaw, Farrell founded his own firm, Farrells. He garnered a strong reputation for contextual urban design schemes, as well as exuberant works of postmodernism such as the MI6 Building. Windsor House (London)
Windsor House is an office building in Victoria Street, City of Westminster, London, England. It was built in 1973 by R. Seifert & Partners, The building replaced an older Victorian building, Windsor House (the Windsor Hotel, formerly the Army and Navy Hotel), which had been built in 1888 by Frederick Thomas Pilkington. The 1970s complex consists of an eighteen-storey tower, a two-storey block (Butler Place) and residential accommodation (Christchurch House) above an underground car park and basement. The purple granite and glass facade of the main structure stands 70 m (230 ft). Butler Place houses Lloyds TSB at ground level. The eighteen-storey tower was previously occupied solely by staff from Transport for London but they have since left the building. The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC), formerly the Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG), is a department of His Majesty's Government responsible for housing, communities, local government in England and the levelling up policy. Christopher Francis Patten, Baron Patten of Barnes, (; born 12 May 1944) is a British politician who was the 28th and last Governor of Hong Kong from 1992 to 1997 and Chairman of the Conservative Party from 1990 to 1992.
