29th General Assembly Of Newfoundland
The members of the 29th General Assembly of Newfoundland were elected in the Newfoundland general election held in June 1949. The general assembly sat from July 11, 1949 to November 3, 1951. This was the first general election held in Newfoundland since the assembly was replaced by an appointed Commission of Government in 1934. Newfoundland had joined Canadian confederation in March 1949. The Liberal Party led by Joey Smallwood formed the government. Reginald F. Sparkes served as speaker. There were four sessions of the 29th General Assembly: Sir Albert Walsh served as lieutenant governor of Newfoundland until September 1949. Colonial Building
The Colonial Building is a historic government building located in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The building was the home of the colonial and later provincial Newfoundland and Labrador, Newfoundland government and the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly, House of Assembly from January 28, 1850 to July 28, 1959. In 1974, it was declared a Provincial Historic Site. In 1832 when the Colony of Newfoundland governed itself by representative government there was not a formal building assigned to house the legislature. The first home of the Legislature was a tavern and Public house, lodging house on Duckworth Street owned and operated by a Mrs. Mary Widdicombe Travers, Mary Travers. Burgeo-La Poile
Burgeo-La Poile is a provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. As of 2011, there are 7,527 eligible voters living within the district. The district was first created when Newfoundland joined confederation in 1949 as Burgeo and La Poile, and existed until 1975. It was recreated in 1995 following a reduction in the number of seats in the House of Assembly from 52 to 48, forming from the amalgamation of the former districts of La Poile and Burgeo-Bay D'Espoir. The district takes in the southwestern corner of Newfoundland, stretching from the town of Burgeo in the east to Cape Ray in the west. Its largest community, Port aux Basques, is the island's link to continental North America through the Marine Atlantic ferry service. Baxter Morgan
Albert Baxter Morgan (January 2, 1918 – September 19, 1986) was an auditor, accountant and politician in Newfoundland. He represented Green Bay in the Newfoundland House of Assembly from 1949 to 1956. The son of John T. and Amy S. Morgan, he was born in Port de Grave and was educated there, at Prince of Wales College, at St. Francis Xavier University and at Memorial University. Morgan taught school at Ship Cove and Flat Islands. Grand Falls-Windsor—Buchans is a provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Prior to 2006, the district was Grand Falls-Buchans, while expanded slightly in all directions it took in no major municipalities. As of 2011, there are 7,450 eligible voters living within the district. In the heart of central Newfoundland. Includes part of the town of Grand Falls-Windsor to the north and stretches westward. Edward Spencer (Canadian Politician)
Edward Samuel Spencer (January 2, 1893 – June 17, 1973) was a civil engineer and politician in Newfoundland. He represented Grand Falls from 1949 to 1959, Bonavista North from 1959 to 1962 and Fogo from 1962 to 1966 in the Newfoundland House of Assembly. The son of Edward Thomas Spencer and Sarah Roberts, he was born in Pilley's Island and received his primary education in Newfoundland, going on to study engineering with the International Correspondence School of Scranton, Pennsylvania. He began work with the Nova Scotia Steel Company at Wabana in 1908, as a surveyor and then assistant engineer. In 1914, Spencer married Daisie E. Sellars. In 1923, he became work as an engineer working on highways for the Newfoundland government. He was in charge of construction of the Botwood seaplane base and then was maintenance engineer at Gander airport. Fortune Bay—Cape La Hune is a provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. When created in 1975 it was called Fortune-Hermitage. As of 2011, there are 6,053 eligible voters living within the district. The district covers a larger section of Newfoundland's south coast. The district includes territory east of Burgeo, and stretches to the end of Fortune Bay near the beginning of the Burin Peninsula. John R
John R. (born John Richbourg, August 20, 1910 - February 15, 1986) was an American radio disc jockey who attained fame in the 1950s and 1960s for playing rhythm and blues music on Nashville radio station WLAC. He was also a notable record producer and artist manager. Richbourg was arguably the most popular and charismatic of the four announcers at WLAC who showcased popular African-American music in nightly programs from the late 1940s to the early 1970s. (The other three were Gene Nobles, Herman Grizzard, and Bill "Hoss" Allen.) Later rock music disc jockeys, such as Alan Freed and Wolfman Jack, mimicked Richbourg's practice of using speech that simulated African-American street language of the mid-twentieth century. Gordon Janes
Gordon Winston Janes (October 12, 1918 – 1985) was an accountant, educator, business manager and politician in Newfoundland. He represented Fogo in the Newfoundland House of Assembly from 1949 to 1956. The son of Samuel Janes and Violet Noble, he was born in Pool's Island and was educated there and in St. John's. He taught for a short time after completing his education. Janes served in a Newfoundland field artillery unit during World War II and was wounded and discharged in 1944. Ferryland (electoral District)
Ferryland is a provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. As of 2011, there are 8,571 eligible voters living within the district. This was the most strongly anti-Confederation area of the province in the late 1940s, but turned Liberal in the 1950s and 1960s. It is historically a fishing district, but tourism has been growing. Peter John Cashin
Major Peter John Cashin (March 8, 1890 – May 21, 1977) was a businessman, soldier and politician in Newfoundland. Early life Cashin, a son of Sir Michael Cashin, joined the Newfoundland Regiment during World War I and ultimately served in the British Machine Gun Corps. He returned to the family fishery supply business upon being demobilized. Political career He entered politics winning election to the Newfoundland House of Assembly as a Liberal-Labour-Progressive in 1923 before crossing the floor to join the Newfoundland Liberal Party in 1925 in a dispute over tariff policy. He served as minister of finance from 1928 to 1932 when he resigned from the government and accused Sir Richard Squires, the Prime Minister of Newfoundland, of falsifying the minutes of Executive Council meetings to cover up certain legal fees he had been paying himself out of public funds. Being a regional services centre heavily influences the district's economy. Communities include: Carbonear, Harbour Grace, Bristol's Hope, Bryant's Cove, Freshwater, Harbour Grace South, Riverhead, Spaniard's Bay, Tilton Upper Island Cove, and Victoria.
