26th (Cameronian) Regiment Of Foot
The 26th (Cameronian) Regiment of Foot was an infantry regiment of the Scots Army and subsequently a Scottish infantry regiment of the British Army, active from 1689 to 1881. Although the regiment took the name of its first colonel as The Earl of Angus's Regiment, it became popularly known as The Cameronians until 1751, when it was ranked as the 26th Foot. Under the Childers Reforms it amalgamated with the 90th Regiment of Foot (Perthshire Volunteers) to form the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) in 1881. The Cameronians were themselves disbanded in 1968, meaning that no Army unit today perpetuates the lineage of the 26th Foot. 26 Engineer Regiment is a regiment of the British Army's Royal Engineers. It is based at Swinton Barracks, Salisbury Plain, Wiltshire. History The unit was formed in 1950 and in April 1956 moved to 4th Armoured Division in the same role. In November 1957, the regiment was reorganised and re-titled as "Headquarters Royal Engineers, 4th Division" and moved to Paderborn, Germany. By 1969, it was expanded in size and in 1970, the regiment moved to Iserlohn. From July to November 1974, the regiment was tasked as an infantry unit and served in Northern Ireland. By 1978, the regiment was reorganised again as the new 3rd Armoured Division's Armoured Engineer Regiment. The 26th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 26th Illinois Infantry was organized for 3 years' service with seven companies at Camp Butler, Illinois and mustered into Federal service on August 31, 1861.
