24th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment
The 24th New York Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment in the Army of the Potomac during the American Civil War from the state of New York. It was a part of the famed Eastern Iron Brigade under Colonel Walter Phelps Jr. The 24th was mustered into service on July 2, 1861, and mustered out of service May 29, 1863. Col. Timothy Sullivan commanded the regiment first, which was organized in Elmira, New York. It originally enlisted soldiers for two-year enlistments and later received 3-year men, who were later folded into the 76th New York Volunteer Infantry. Samuel L. 24 Commando Royal Engineers is a unit of the British Army's Royal Engineers supporting 3 Commando Brigade. History The regiment, which was formed in April 2008, is one of two British Army units attached to 3 Commando Brigade, Royal Marines, the other being 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery. It was announced on 4 July 2012 that 24 Commando Engineer Regiment was to disband under Army 2020. Members of the unit were to be dispersed to other British Army units and 59 Independent Commando Squadron would be re-formed to replace it. In a contrasting written statement on 10 April 2014, the Minister for Defence Mark Francois, stated that this withdrawal would not take place. The unit was to be retained but reduced in size. The 24th Regiment Grey's Horse was a Canadian Militia cavalry regiment and part of the Non-Permanent Active Militia. History The regiment was originally formed in Oxford County, Ontario and Waterloo County, Ontario, on April 2, 1908, and named in honour of Albert Grey, 4th Earl Grey, Governor General of Canada. The regiment was headquartered in Woodstock with squadrons in Woodstock and Ingersoll. Its lineage can be traced to 1798 with The Oxford Rifles. In 1914 it joined with the 22nd Regiment "The Oxford Rifles" to form A Company of the 1st Battalion, CEF. Headquarters moved Wingham, Ontario, after World War I. The 24th Regiment of (Light) Dragoons was a regiment in the British Army which existed between 1794 and 1819. English establishment The regiment was raised by Colonel William Loftus and commissioned on 20 March 1794 as the 24th Regiment of (Light) Dragoons, which was sworn in at Netley Camp, near Southampton. On 1 October, Colonel Loftus was commissioned as the colonel of the regiment, moving his headquarters to Blandford in Dorset in the same month, billeting in neighbouring towns and villages for six months. Lieutenant Colonel Lord William Bentinck was appointed to command the regiment, reporting at Blandford by 28 December 1794. Loftus had raised the regiment with the intention of serving in Ireland, deliberately recruited mostly from Norfolk men and not Irish recruits to reduce the potential of divided loyalties. The 24th Michigan Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. It was part of the Union Iron Brigade. Service The 24th Michigan Infantry was organized at Detroit, Michigan and mustered into Federal service on August 15, 1862. It was assigned to the famous Iron Brigade in the Army of the Potomac. The brigade's commander General John Gibbon had requested a new regiment be added to his command because its four original regiments (the 2nd, 6th, and 7th Wisconsin and the 19th Indiana) had been severely depleted by combat action and numbered less than 1000 men total by October 1862. The 24th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment was a volunteer infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 24th Wisconsin was organized at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and mustered into Federal service August 15, 1862. The regiment's flag was provided by citizens of Madison, who had promised it to the first regiment to reach full recruitment. The regiment served under generals Grant and Sherman and was engaged in the battles Stone's River, Chickamauga, Franklin, Nashville, Missionary Ridge and Chattanooga. The 19th and 24th Consolidated Arkansas Infantry Regiment (1863–1865) was a Confederate Army infantry regiment during the American Civil War. The unit was assembled from the portions of Dawson's 19th Arkansas Infantry Regiment and the 24th Arkansas Infantry Regiment, that were not present when the garrison of Arkansas Post surrendered. The unit is most often referred to as Hardy's Arkansas Infantry Regiment, but by the late stages of the war, the unit was simply referred to simply as Hardy's 19th Arkansas Infantry Regiment.
