241st Battalion (Canadian Scottish Borderers), CEF
The 241st (Canadian Scottish Borderers) Battalion, CEF was a unit in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. Based in Windsor, Ontario, the unit began recruiting in the spring of 1916 in Essex County. After sailing to England in May 1917, the battalion was absorbed into the 5th and 12th Reserve Battalions in June, 1917. Canadian Expeditionary Force
The Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) was the expeditionary field force of Canada during the First World War. It was formed following Britain’s declaration of war on Germany on 15 August 1914, with an initial strength of one infantry division. The division subsequently fought at Ypres on the Western Front, with a newly raised second division reinforcing the committed units to form the Canadian Corps. The CEF and corps was eventually expanded to four infantry divisions, which were all committed to the fighting in France and Belgium along the Western Front. A fifth division was partially raised in 1917, but was broken up in 1918 and used as reinforcements following heavy casualties. The Essex And Kent Scottish
The Essex and Kent Scottish is a Primary Reserve infantry regiment of the Canadian Army. The regiment was formed in 1954 by the amalgamation of The Essex Scottish Regiment and The Kent Regiment. Its colonel-in-chief is Prince Michael of Kent. The current commanding officer is Lieutenant-Colonel Gord Prentice (from Sep 2019). The regimental sergeant major is CWO Jeremy Clark. There are two standing platoons within the regiment: 1 Platoon based in Windsor, Ontario; and 2 Platoon, based in Chatham-Kent, Ontario. Essex Scottish Regiment
The Essex Scottish was an infantry regiment of the Canadian Army until 1954. History Founded in 1885 as the 21st Essex Battalion of Infantry, it went through several name changes including: 1887 - 21st Battalion, Essex Fusiliers; 1900 - 21st Regiment, Essex Fusiliers; 1920 - The Essex Fusiliers, acquiring its present title in 1927. During World War II the regiment was among the first Canadian units to see combat in the European theatre during the invasion of Dieppe. By the end of The Dieppe Raid, the Essex Scottish Regiment had suffered 121 fatal casualties, with many others wounded and captured. The Essex Scottish later participated in Operation Atlantic and was slaughtered attempting to take Verrières Ridge on July 21. By the war's end, the Essex Scottish Regiment had suffered over 550 war dead; its 2,500 casualties were the most of any unit in the Canadian army during the Second World War.
