239th Fighter Aviation Division
The 239th Fighter Aviation Division was a fighter aircraft unit of the Soviet Air Forces and the Russian Air Force, which was in existence during World War II and from 1949 to 1998. First formation Its first formation was established on 12 June 1942 from the 6th Shock Aviation Group. With 6th Air Army from July 1942. On 1 July 1942 its first formation was part of the 6th Air Army. Fought in Battle of Demyansk (1943) and Staraya Russa Offensive. In recognition of its actions, the division was renamed the 5th Guards Fighter Aviation Division on 18 March 1943. Second formation Its second formation traces its origins to the formation of the 323rd Fighter Aviation Division in May 1943. In 1945 its headquarters was established at Kluczewo Airfield, Poland. Soviet Air Forces
The Soviet Air Forces ( rus, Военно-воздушные силы, r=Voyenno-vozdushnyye sily, VVS; literally "Military Air Forces") were one of the air forces of the Soviet Union. The other was the Soviet Air Defence Forces. The Air Forces were formed from components of the Imperial Russian Air Service in 1917, and faced their greatest test during World War II. The groups were also involved in the Korean War, and dissolved along with the Soviet Union itself in 1991–92. 6th Air Army
The 6th Air Army was an air army of the Red Army's Air Force during the Second World War and from 1946-1949. It was formed twice : in 1942 as part of the Red Army's Air Forces, and redesignated in 1944, and in 1946 and redesignated in 1949. The 6th Air Army was first formed on 14 June 1942 from the Air Forces of the North-Western Front, and its first commander was Major General of Aviation Daniil Kondratyuk, who held command to January 1943. Battle Of Demyansk (1943)
The Battle of Demyansk was part of the Soviet Union, Soviet offensive Operation Polar Star against Axis powers, Axis forces which took place in Demyansk from 15 to 28 February 1943. The Northwestern Front and Mikhail Khozin Special Group engaged the 16th Army (Wehrmacht), 16th Army of Army Group North in an operation for control of Demyansk and to destroy Axis forces in the region. As a result of the Demyansk Offensive, the Northwestern Front eliminated the Demyansk salient, but the original plan of envelopment failed. Background At the beginning of 1942, the troops of the Northwestern Front, advancing in the direction of Staraya Russa, had achieved considerable success in encircling the 16th Army in the area of Demyansk. Kluczewo Airfield
Kluczewo Airfield is a former Soviet airbase located in Kluczewo, a suburb of Stargard Szczeciński in Poland. Its concrete runway measured 2,500 x 60 m, but it has been closed to air traffic since 1992. Today the area of the former base has been converted into an industrial park. The base was originally built by the Luftwaffe in 1935 and used as ''Fliegerhorst Klützow'' until early 1945 when it was overrun by the Red Army. Soviet air units were based there from 1948 to 1992. Over the years, the base was expanded, and a number of hardened aircraft shelters built. A small military town housing the airmen and their families was built nearby. The 239th Fighter Aviation Division was headquartered at the base from 1945 to 1992. The last flying unit stationed there was the 159th 'Novorossiysk' Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment flying Su-27 Flankers.
