230th Rifle Division (Soviet Union)
The 230th Rifle Division was an infantry division of the Red Army, originally formed as one of the first reserve rifle divisions following the German invasion of the USSR. After being hastily organized, it joined the fighting front along the lower Dniepr River as part of 6th Army. After the German victory east of Kyiv, it retreated into the Donbas as part of 12th Army and spent the winter in the fighting around Rostov-on-Don. When the German 1942 summer offensive began, it was driven back, now as part of 37th Army, and largely encircled near Millerovo. While not destroyed, by late August it was so depleted that it was disbanded. A new 230th was formed in late June 1943 based on a Siberian rifle brigade. After an inauspicious debut, the division was briefly removed from the fighting front for additional training. 3rd Ukrainian Front
The 3rd Ukrainian Front (Russian: Третий Украинский фронт) was a Front of the Red Army during World War II. It was founded on 20 October 1943, on the basis of a Stavka order of October 16, 1943, by renaming the Southwestern Front. It included 1st Guards Army, 8th Guards Army, 6th, 12th, and 46th Armies and 17th Air Army. Later it included 5th Shock, 4th and 9th Guards Army, 26th, 27th, 28th, 37th, 57th Army, 6th Guards Tank Army, and the Bulgarian First, Second and Fourth Armies. 9th Rifle Corps
The 9th Rifle Corps was a corps of the Red Army. Located in Simferopol during the beginning of the war in the east. History The corps headquarters was formed in accordance with orders of the North Caucasus Military District of 6 June and 26 August 1922. Its headquarters was initially located at Grozny, then relocated to Vladikavkaz in January 1923 and thence to Novocherkassk in August 1925. The corps included the 13th Rifle Division (Soviet Union), 13th Rifle Division for the disarmament of population of Dagestan in August 1925 and the 131st Separate Motor Rifle Brigade, 9th Rifle Division for the suppression of Karachays, Karachay rebels between April and May 1930. The 5th Shock Army was a Red Army field army of World War II. The army was formed on 9 December 1942 by redesignating the 10th Reserve Army. The army was formed two times prior to this with neither formation lasting more than a month before being redesignated. Formation The 5th Shock Army was formed on December 8, 1942, based upon the headquarters of the 10th Reserve Army, which was assigned to the Reserve of the Supreme High Command at the time. Millerovo (russian: Ми́ллерово) is a town and the administrative center of Millerovsky District in Rostov Oblast, Russia, close to the border with Ukraine. Population History It was founded in 1786 and named after its founder, the army officer Ivan Abramovich Müller, who set up a farm estate after he received vacant land by the river deep in the Decree of the Empress Catherine the Great on February 14, 1786. At the end of the 19th century, it became an important railway hub. The 37th Army was an Army-level formation of the Soviet Union during the Second World War. The army was formed twice during the war. The army was part of the Southern Group of Forces in Romania and Bulgaria. First formation The 37th Army first formed on 10 August 1941 in the Southwestern Front with the command group from the Kiev Fortified Region and other reserves in front reserves. Upon formation, the army took up defensive positions to the west of Kiev and on the left bank of the Dnieper River. During the defense of Kiev the army suffered severe losses against superior German forces. The army was surrounded in the city of Kiev and was ordered to break out on 19 September. The Donbas or Donbass (, ; uk, Донба́с ; russian: Донба́сс ) is a historical, cultural, and economic region in eastern Ukraine. Parts of the Donbas are controlled by Russian separatist groups as a result of the Russo-Ukrainian War: the Donetsk People's Republic and the Luhansk People's Republic. The 6th Army was a field army of the Red Army during the Russian Civil War, which was formed twice. First Formation The 6th Army was formed on 11 September 1918 in the region of the Arkhangelsk, Kotlas and Vyatsky districts. The headquarters were located in Vologda (September 1918 - February 1920) and later Arkhangelsk (March - April 1920). It was part of the Northern Front which fought against Entente troops and the White Northern Army which were based in Archangelsk and Murmansk.
