The 22nd Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 22nd Illinois Infantry was organized at Belleville, Illinois and mustered into Federal service on June 25, 1861. The regiment was mustered out on July 7, 1864. Its veterans and recruits were transferred to the 42nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The 22nd Virginia Cavalry Regiment was a cavalry regiment raised in Virginia for service in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. It fought mostly in southwestern Virginia, East Tennessee, and the Shenandoah Valley. Virginia's 22nd Cavalry Regiment completed its organization in October, 1863, and was sometimes called "Bowen's Regiment Virginia Mounted Riflemen," having been raised by Col. Henry S. Bowen, formerly of the 188th ( Tazewell County Militia. The unit served in William Lowther Jackson's and John McCausland's Brigade and confronted the Federals in Tennessee, western Virginia (including newly created West Virginia), and the Shenandoah Valley. The 22nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Cavalry was a cavalry regiment of the Union Army during the American Civil War. History The regiment was formed in February 1864, at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, by the consolidation of two battalions, the Ringgold Cavalry and a battalion raised during the Gettysburg Campaign. The seven companies were mostly raised in Washington County. Jacob C. Higgins was selected to serve as colonel, A. J. Greenfield as lieutenant colonel, and George T. Work, Elias S. Troxell, and Henry A. Myers as majors. The 22nd Pennsylvania Cavalry was sent to Maryland for training, after which it was assigned to the Department of West Virginia. The 22nd Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry was an infantry regiment in the Union army during the American Civil War. The 22nd Massachusetts was organized by Senator Henry Wilson (future Vice-President during the Ulysses Grant administration) and was therefore known as "Henry Wilson's Regiment." It was formed in Boston, Massachusetts, and established on September 28, 1861, for a term of three years. Arriving in Washington in October 1861, the regiment spent the following winter in camp at Hall's Hill, near Arlington in Virginia. It became part of the Army of the Potomac, with which it would be associated for its entire term of service. The regiment saw its first action during the siege of Yorktown in April 1862. It was involved in the Peninsular campaign, particularly the Battle of Gaines' Mill during which it suffered its worst casualties (numerically) of the war.
