22nd Battalion (Australia)
The 22nd Battalion was an infantry battalion of the Australian Army. It was raised in 1915 as part of the Australian Imperial Force for service during World War I and formed part of the 6th Brigade, attached to the 2nd Division. It fought during the Gallipoli campaign and on the Western Front before being disbanded in 1919. In 1921, it was re-raised as a part-time unit and was merged with the 29th Battalion in 1930 to form the "29th/22nd Infantry Battalion". Split in August 1939 and known as the "22nd Battalion (South Gippsland Regiment)", the battalion saw action against the Japanese during World War II in the Huon Peninsula and New Britain campaigns. The battalion was disbanded in June 1946. The 2/22nd Battalion was an infantry battalion of the Australian Army. Raised as part of the Second Australian Imperial Force for service during World War II, the battalion formed part of the 23rd Brigade, attached to the 8th Division. It was captured by the Japanese during the Battle of Rabaul in 1942. After being captured, the battalion was not re-raised and a large number of its personnel died in captivity; those that did not were returned to Australia at the end of the war in 1945. The 22nd Battalion, also known as the "Wellington Battalion", was an infantry battalion of the New Zealand Military Forces, which served during the Second World War. After undertaking defensive duties in the United Kingdom from mid-1940 until early 1941, the battalion then fought in the Battles of Greece and Crete where it suffered heavy casualties and lost a large number of men who were taken as prisoners of war. After being rebuilt, the battalion fought in North Africa, fighting in Operation Crusader, before undertaking garrison duties in Syria. It later fought in the First Battle of El Alamein during which they suffered heavy casualties at Ruweisat Ridge. Re-formed, the battalion later fought in the Second Battle of El Alamein. The 22nd Peacekeeping Battalion ( ro, Batalionul 22 de menținere a păcii) is a military unit of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Moldova. The battalion was established on May 11, 1999. The battalion has the task of preparing for peacekeeping operations and humanitarian missions outside of Moldova. Deployments Soldiers of the battalion have participated in international exercises in Albania, Armenia, Bulgaria, Germany, Macedonia, Romania, Sweden, Ukraine, and the United States. Mission and Capabilities The 22D Chemical Battalion (CBRNE) is a unit of the U. S. Army Chemical Corps known as “America’s Guardians.” As of March 2021 the battalion is stationed at Fort Bliss, TX. The 22nd Battalion, Virginia Infantry Regulars was raised in Virginia for service in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War and, served as infantry. It fought mostly with the Army of Northern Virginia. 22nd Infantry Battalion was organized with six companies of the 2nd Regiment, Virginia Artillery. It served in Field's, Heth's, and H.H. Walker's Brigade, and fought with the Army of Northern Virginia from Cedar Mountain to Cold Harbor, then was involved in the Petersburg siege south of the James River. On December 22, 1864, the battalion was disbanded and its members distributed among other Virginia commands.
