22 December 2013 South Thailand Bombings
The 2013 Southern Thailand bombings were a series of bombings that took place in Danok, Padang Besar and Sadao, Songkhla Province, Thailand near the Malaysian border on 22 December 2013. Attacks The first explosion occurred around 10:30 and 10:40 in the morning when a bomb placed on a motorcycle exploded in front of the Padang Besar police station on the Thai side of the border. No one was injured in the blast The second bomb exploded at about the same time. It was also placed on a motorcycle and went off in front of the Sadao police station. Also no one was injured. The third bomb went off in front of the Oliver Hotel in Danok. It was placed in a car and activated with a digital watch. The explosions also resulted in a fire, which destroyed the business premises, several vehicles as well as a part of the hotel. The 2012 Southern Thailand bombings were a series of bombings that took place in Yala, Yala Province and in Hat Yai, Songkhla Province, on 31 March 2012. Attacks Yala The first attack involved a truck bomb that ripped through a busy shopping district in Yala. About 20 minutes later, a second bomb planted in a motorcycle exploded as rescuers convened at the site of the original bombing. Later, a third explosion from a device placed in a car set fire to nearby buildings. About 11 people were killed and 110 wounded by the blasts, with the second explosion causing a majority of casualties. Hat Yai Following the bombings in Songkhla, an explosion in the basement Lee Gardens Plaza Hotel damaged that building and an adjacent McDonald's in Hat Yai, killing at least four and leaving 416 wounded, mainly from smoke inhalation. Bukit Kayu Hitam
Bukit Kayu Hitam is a small town in Kubang Pasu District, Kedah, Malaysia. It is situated near the Malaysia–Thailand border and the main and busiest road border crossing between Malaysia and Thailand is located here. On the Thai side of the border is the village of Ban Danok, where the Sadao checkpoint is located. Transportation Bukit Kayu Hitam is the northern end of the North–South Expressway and Malaysia Federal Route 1 which runs the entire length of Peninsula Malaysia from Johor Bahru, Johor in the south where the border crossing to Singapore is located.
