20 Studio One Hits
''20 Studio One Hits'' was a compilation album of New Zealand and New Zealand based artists culled from the Studio One television series on the N.Z.B.C. It was released in 1972. It was followed up by ''20 Studio One Hits Volume 2'' the following year. The albums are representative of the televised Studio One talent quests. Some of the songs that appeared on the album went on to become hits in Australasia. The records which were released on the Music for Leisure label are a historical account of the Studio One talent quests. Background The twenty songs on the album were selected from over 2,000 original songs were performed on the Studio One television program. The Studio One TV program was hot property for N.Z.B.C and a lot of emphasis was put on the program instead of the Loxene Awards. ''The New Zealand Herald'' is a daily newspaper published in Auckland, New Zealand, owned by New Zealand Media and Entertainment, and considered a newspaper of record for New Zealand. It has the largest newspaper circulation of all newspapers in New Zealand, peaking at over 200,000 copies in 2006, although circulation of the daily ''Herald'' had declined to 100,073 copies on average by September 2019. Its main circulation area is the Auckland region. It is also delivered to much of the upper North Island including Northland, Waikato and King Country. Steve Gilpin
Stephen Ellis Gilpin (28 April 19496 January 1992) was a New Zealand singer and a founder of new wave band Mi-Sex. In November 1972, he won the national final of TV talent show, ''New Faces''. In 1977 he was a founder of Mi-Sex, which became one of the most popular new wave bands in New Zealand and Australia in the late 1970s to early 1980s. They relocated to Australia in August 1978 and reached number one on the Australian Kent Music Report Singles Chart with "Computer Games" (1979) and had top five hits with "Computer Games" and "People" on the New Zealand Singles Chart. Gilpin also had a solo career including releasing material before forming Mi-Sex. He joined various groups after their disbandment and performed as a solo artist. Bunny Walters
Bunny Te Kokiri Miha Waahi Walters (31 May 1953 – 14 December 2016) was a New Zealand singer who had a number of New Zealand hits during the 1970s. He is best known for the hits "Brandy" and "Take the Money and Run". Background Of Ngāi Te Rangi descent, Walters was born and raised in Katikati, a town on the North Island of New Zealand. Career In 1969, he competed against Tui Fox at Joe Brown's at the Rotorua Soundshell during the ''Search for Stars'' event held there. Fox was singing similar material to Walters. Fox won the final with Walters coming in second. His first single, titled "Just Out of Reach", was released in 1969. He then released "It's Been Too Long" and "Can't Keep You Out of My Heart". Kandiah Kamalesvaran ( ta, கந்தையா கமலேஸ்வரன்; born 13 November 1934), better known by his stage name Kamahl, is a Malaysian-born Australian singer and recording artist. Raymond John Patrick Columbus (4 November 1942 – 29 November 2016) was a New Zealand Benny Award-winning singer and songwriter, television host, music manager and entertainer, with a career spanning six decades. As the lead singer of Ray Columbus & the Invaders, his best-known hit was "She's A Mod". Early years Columbus attended Xavier College in Christchurch, studied tap, but was more interested in the rock 'n' roll of the era and formed his first band, The Dominoes, in 1959. Based in a church hall, in Addington, Christchurch, the band put on Saturday night dances. Often in the last bracket of songs for the night, Columbus would throw a big sombrero hat down on the floor and dance around it while the band played the Mexican Hat Dance. Shona Laing
Shona Laing (born 9 October 1955) is a New Zealand musician. She has had several hits in her native country, as well as a few minor international hits, most notably "(Glad I'm) Not a Kennedy" and "Soviet Snow". Laing contributed to Manfred Mann's Earth Band album ''Somewhere in Afrika'' and contributed music to, and appeared in, the 1985 action film ''Shaker Run''. Steve Allen (born Alan Stephenson) is a New Zealand singer and recording artist who found popularity as a singer during the 1970s. He is also known for the hit song " Join Together", and the song for the television commercial, "Use Your Nana". Background Early on in his career he was the lead guitarist and vocalist with a Wellington group called the Lost Souls. He left the group in 1968 to go solo. The following year he had a single "This Old Man" bw "Just You Wait" on the HMV label. He was credited as Stevie Allen. "Join Together" was a hit for singer Steve Allen in 1974. The song was chosen for the Commonwealth Games that year. It was released on the Viking record label. Background Allen had previously had a no 1 hit in New Zealand with his version of " Top Of The World". "Join Together" was recorded in winter at Wellington in the EMI studios in the winter of 1973. The backing track was recorded with just four musicians. It had Allen on piano, drummer, Mike Conway,bassist, Dave Orams, and organist Mike Le Petit. The other parts were added later. It was an entrant in the Studio One competition.
