206 (Ulster) Battery Royal Artillery is an Army Reserve (United Kingdom), Army Reserve sub-unit, part of the 105th Regiment Royal Artillery. The battery is spread between two locations, Newtownards and Coleraine. History Formed on 1 April 1967 as 206 (Coleraine) Light Air Defence Battery Royal Artillery (Volunteers) from 245 (Ulster) Light Air Defence Regiment RA (TA), the battery was originally part of 102nd (Ulster) Air Defence Regiment Royal Artillery, 102 (Ulster and Scottish) Light Air Defence Regiment Royal Artillery (Volunteers). On 1 April 1993 the battery transferred to 105th Regiment Royal Artillery, 105 (Scottish) Air Defence Regiment Royal Artillery (Volunteers) after the disbandment of 102 Regiment. 206 (Ulster) Battery formed HQ and A Troop at Newtownards with B Troop at Coleraine. 105th Regiment Royal Artillery
105th Regiment Royal Artillery is part of the Army Reserve (United Kingdom), Army Reserve and has sub-units throughout Scotland and Northern Ireland. It is currently equipped with the L118 Light Gun. History The regiment was first formed as the 105 (Scottish) Air Defence Regiment Royal Artillery (Volunteers) on 1 April 1986 with its Regimental Headquarters at Artillery House, near Redford Barracks in Edinburgh. Its units were 207 (City of Glasgow) Air Defence Battery at Glasgow, 212 (Highland) Air Defence Battery at Arbroath and 218 (Lothian) Air Defence Battery at Livingston, West Lothian, Livingston. It was equipped with a succession of missile systems, Blowpipe, Javelin and finally the Starstreak (missile), Starstreak missile until 2005. L118 Light Gun
The L118 light gun is a 105 mm towed howitzer. It was originally designed and produced in England for the British Army in the 1970s. It has since been widely exported. The L119 and the United States Army's M119 are variants that use a different type of ammunition. History Development From 1961 to 1975, the British Army had the widely used 105 mm OTO Melara Mod 56, which it called the "L5 pack howitzer", with L10 ordnance as its light artillery weapon, replacing the 75 mm howitzer, 4.2 inch mortar and 25-pounder gun in eight regular artillery regiments. It fires the US M1 type ammunition (called "105 mm How" in the UK). The Mod 56 was originally designed in Italy for its mountain artillery units. The Army Reserve is the active-duty volunteer reserve force of the British Army. It is separate from the Regular Reserve whose members are ex-Regular personnel who retain a statutory liability for service. 102nd (Ulster) Air Defence Regiment Royal Artillery was part of the Territorial Army and used to have sub-units initially in Scotland and Northern Ireland and, latterly, just in Northern Ireland. History The regiment was formed as 102 (Ulster and Scottish) Light Air Defence Regiment Royal Artillery (Volunteers) in 1967, from the amalgamation of 245 (Ulster) Light Air Defence Regiment RA, 445 (Lowland) Light Air Defence Regiment RA, and 278 (Lowland) Field Regiment RA (The City of Edinburgh).
