2026 Portuguese Presidential Election
Presidential elections are scheduled to be held in Portugal in January 2026. The elections will elect the successor to President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who is barred from running for a third term. Background and election procedure Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was re-elected in January 2021 with almost 61 percent of the votes on the first round. He took the oath of office on 9 March 2021, and continued the cohabitation with Socialist Prime Minister António Costa that lasted until April 2024. This cohabitation ended after the March 2024 elections which resulted in the nomination of Luís Montenegro, from the Social Democratic Party, also the party of the President, as Prime Minister. Alexandra Ludomila Ribeiro Fernandes Leitão (born April 8, 1973) is a Portuguese jurist and professor of law. Biography Leitão was born on April 8, 1973. She was the Assistant Secretary of State for Education in the XXI Constitutional Government and Minister for the Modernization of the State and Public Administration in the XXII Constitutional Government. Ana Maria Rosa Martins Gomes (born 9 February 1954), better known as Ana Gomes, is a Portuguese former diplomat and politician of the Socialist Party (PS). She earned wide recognition for her role in negotiating independence for East Timor, a former Portuguese colony, and in the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between Portugal and Indonesia. Figueira da Foz (), also known as Figueira for short, is a city and a municipality in the Coimbra District, in Portugal. 2021 Portuguese Presidential Election
The 2021 presidential election was held in Portugal on 24 January. The incumbent President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, was reelected for a second term. The election was held during the COVID-19 pandemic, and Portugal was under a lockdown as of election day. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was reelected by a landslide, winning 60.7% of the votes. He won every district in the country and all 308 municipalities, a result which happened for the first time ever in Portuguese democracy; he won 3,083 parishes out of 3,092. The election also marked the rise of right-wing candidate André Ventura, leader of CHEGA, who polled 3rd with almost 12% of the votes. In second place, former MEP and Ambassador Ana Gomes was able to win 13% of the votes, the best result ever for a female candidate in a presidential election. Chega (political Party)
Chega (; officially stylised as CHEGA!; ) is a national conservative, right-wing populist political party in Portugal formed in 2019 by André Ventura. It is characterized as being between the right-wing and far-right of the political spectrum. Its inclusion in the register of Portuguese political parties was accepted by the Constitutional Court on 9 April 2019. André Claro Amaral Ventura (; born 15 January 1983) is a right-wing Portuguese politician and former sports pundit. He briefly worked as a senior civil servant at the Portuguese tax office. He founded the Chega party in April 2019, and was elected to the Assembly of the Republic for the Lisbon District that October.
