High Jump
The high jump is a track and field event in which competitors must jump unaided over a horizontal bar placed at measured heights without dislodging it. In its modern, most-practiced format, a bar is placed between two standards with a crash mat for landing. Since ancient times, competitors have introduced increasingly effective techniques to arrive at the current form, and the current universally preferred method is the Fosbury Flop, in which athletes run towards the bar and leap head first with their back to the bar. The discipline is, alongside the pole vault, one of two vertical clearance events in the Olympic athletics program. It is contested at the World Championships in Athletics and the World Athletics Indoor Championships, and is a common occurrence at track and field meets. The high jump was among the first events deemed acceptable for women, having been held at the 1928 Olympic Games. 2024 World Para Athletics Championships
The 2024 World Para Athletics Championships is an upcoming Paralympic track and field meet organized by the World Para Athletics subcommittee of the International Paralympic Committee. It will be the 11th edition of the event and it is scheduled to be held in the Kobe Universiade Memorial Stadium in Kobe, Japan, from 17 to 25 May 2024. This will be the first time the event is held in East Asia. The event was initially scheduled for September 2021 but it was rescheduled to avoid clashing with the 2020 Summer Paralympics which were rescheduled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In January 2022, the organisers requested World Para Athletics for postponement of the event until 2024 due to COVID-19 concerns. A week later, World Para Athletics confirmed that the event would not be held in 2022. Roderick Townsend-Roberts
Roderick Townsend-Roberts (born July 1, 1992) is an American Paralympic athlete. At the 2020 Summer Paralympics he set a high jump world record (2.15 m) and won gold in high jump, silver in long jump. Career He won the long jump and high jump events at the 2016 Rio Paralympics and 2015 Parapan American Games. In 2015 he set two world records (2.07 and 2.12 m) and won the world title in the high jump in his disability class. Townsend-Roberts cleared at the 2019 Mt. SAC Relays to take his world record over 7 feet. Roderick Townsend-Roberts sustained permanent nerve damage to his right arm and shoulder at birth. His parents are Jason and Mary Holloway. Nishad Kumar (born 3 October 1999) is an Indian paralympian and high jumper. He made his first Paralympic Games appearance in 2020 Tokyo representing India and went onto claim silver medal in the men's high jump T47 category with a new Asian record of 2.06m. In the 2022 Asian Para Games, he won a gold medal in the men's high jump T47 at Hangzhou, China. He is currently being supported bOGQ. Mariyappan Thangavelu
Mariyappan Thangavelu (born 28 June 1995) is an Indian Paralympic high jumper. He represented India in the 2016 Summer Paralympics games held in Rio de Janeiro in the men's high jump T-42 category and the 2020 Summer Paralympic games held in Tokyo in the men's high jump T-63 category , winning the gold medal and silver medal respectively in the finals. Ezra Frech (born 11 May 2005) is an American Paralympic athlete who competes in high jump, long jump and sprinting events in international level events. He is a double silver Parapan American Games medalist and is also a motivational speaker and disability rights advocate. Personal life Frech is the eldest of three sons of actress Bahar Soomekh and Clayton Frech. His mother is a Persian Jewish immigrant, and his father converted to Judaism. He was born without most of his left leg (missing a knee and fibula) and missing fingers on his left hand. When he was two years old, Frech had surgery to remove his lower left leg and transplanted a toe from his amputated foot onto his left hand at Boston Children's Hospital. Sam Grewe
Samuel Grewe (born June 10, 1998) is an American Paralympic high jumper. Grewe contracted osteosarcoma aged 13 which resulted in a pseudo-amputation procedure called a rotationplasty being performed on his right leg. Grewe jumped for the University of Notre Dame Track and Field Team, where he studied Pre-Med and resided in Fisher Hall on campus. As of 2022, Grewe attends the University of Michigan Medical School. Jonathan Broom-Edwards is a British para-sport athlete who competes mainly in category T44 high jump events. In 2013 he won his first major international medal with a silver medal at the IPC Athletic World Championship in the high jump. Personal history Broom-Edwards was born in Colchester in 1988. He was born with congenital talipes equinovarus (clubbed foot) in his left foot which leaves him with muscular dystrophy of his calf muscles as well as fusion and restricted range of motion of his left ankle. Derek Loccident
Derek Loccident (born July 13, 1998) is an American T64 Paralympic athlete. Early life Loccident attended Westmoore High School where he played American football. During his senior year he recorded 53 tackles with one interception and earned All-Conference, All-District and Class 6A All-Star honors. He then played college football at Central Oklahoma. On September 9, 2018, he was crawling under a stopped train when it started moving and severed his left foot. He underwent several surgeries when doctors became concerned about infection in his leg, resulting in its amputation. Prior to the accident, during his redshirt sophomore year, he led the team in tackles with 15 in the team's first two games of the season.
