2024 Veikkausliiga
The 2024 Veikkausliiga is the 94th season of top-tier football in Finland, which takes place from April to November. Veikkaus was the league's sponsor. Teams The league consisted of twelve teams; ten teams remaining from the previous season, and two teams promoted from the Ykkönen. HJK entered the season as defending champions. EIF were promoted as champions of the 2023 Ykkönen (returning to the top flight after a 90-year absence), replacing the bottom-placed 2023 Veikkausliiga team ( KTP, relegated after a single-year stint in top flight). Ykkönen runners-up Gnistan were also promoted (marking their debut in the top flight) after fifth-placed Veikkausliiga team Honka were demoted due to bankruptcy, replacing them in the league. Alfie Cicale
Alfie Cicale (born 19 April 2002) is an English professional footballer who plays as a wing back for Veikkausliiga club VPS. Early career Cicale joined the Norwich City youth academy when aged 12. He played with Norwich for three years until he resigned from the academy and continued to study and play football in a small local club with his friends. In 2020, he started studying history in Oxford and playing in Oxford Jesus College university team. During his time at Oxford, his other sport was sprinting. He graduated in 2023 with the best possible grade. Club career After graduating, Cicale trialled with Northampton Town and Swiss club Neuchâtel Xamax, but was not able to get a contract due to his lack of competitive playing experience and due to visa difficulties. Samu Alanko
Samu Alanko (born 16 May 1998) is a Finnish footballer who plays as a winger or attacker for VPS. Career Alanko started his career with Finnish top flight side VPS, where he made 9 appearances and scored 1 goal. On 11 February 2015, Alanko debuted for VPS during a 0-1 loss to SJK. On 20 February 2016, he scored his first goal for VPS during a 2-0 win over Kemi City FC. In 2015, Alanko is sent on loan to Kiisto in the Finnish third division. In 2016, he was sent on loan to Finnish second division club Jaro. In 2018, he returned to VPS in the Finnish top flight after playing for Austrian third division team Austria II. Yevgeni Bashkirov
Yevgeni Olegovich Bashkirov (russian: Евгений Олегович Башкиров; born 6 July 1991) is a Russian professional footballer who plays as a defensive and central midfielder for Finnish club VPS. Career Bashkirov is a graduate of the Zenit football academy. He then played at Zenit Saint Petersburg youth team. He made his professional debut for FC Tom Tomsk on 26 September 2012 in the Russian Cup game against PFC CSKA Moscow. On 31 January 2019, he signed a 1.5-year contract with Rubin Kazan.
