2024 United Kingdom General Election Betting Scandal
During the 2024 United Kingdom general election, 2024 general election campaign, allegations were made that illicit bets were placed by political party members and police officers, some of whom may have had insider knowledge of the date of the general election before Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Prime Minister at the time, publicly announced when it would be held. The allegations started with a report in ''The Guardian'' saying that Conservative Party (UK), Conservative candidate and Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Prime Minister, Craig Williams (British politician), Craig Williams, had placed a £100 bet on 19 May 2024 that the election would be in July, three days before Sunak announced the general election to the public. Gambling Act 2005
The Gambling Act 2005 (2005 c 19) is an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It mainly applies to England and Wales, and to Scotland, and is designed to control all forms of gambling. It transfers authority for licensing gambling from the magistrates' courts to local authorities (specifically unitary authorities, and the councils of metropolitan borough, non-metropolitan district and London boroughs), or to Scottish licensing boards. The Act also created the Gambling Commission. Philip Andrew Davies (born 5 January 1972) is a British politician who has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Shipley in West Yorkshire since the 2005 general election.
