2024 Tauranga Mayoral Election
The 2024 Tauranga mayoral election was held to elect the mayor of Tauranga as part of the 2024 Tauranga local elections. The election took place between 29 June and 20 July 2024, with the official results released on 25 July. It was the first election since the Minister of Local Government appointed a Crown Commission on 9 February 2021 to oversee all of Tauranga City Council's governance responsibilities. The election was held using the Single Transferable Vote system. Mahé Drysdale was elected as mayor. Background The last mayor, Tenby Powell, was elected to the office in October 2019 but resigned in November 2020, eight months after he was unanimously censured by his council for an angry outburst. Mahé Drysdale
Alexander Mahé Owens Drysdale (born 19 November 1978) is a retired New Zealand rower. Drysdale is a two-time Olympic champion and a five-time world champion in the single sculls. He is a seven-time New Zealand national champion and five-time recipient of New Zealand Sportsman of the Year. Early life and background Born in Australia to New Zealand parents, the name Mahé comes from the largest island in the Seychelles. He attended Tauranga Boys' College in Tauranga, New Zealand, then the University of Auckland where he took up rowing at the age of 18. He initially gave up rowing to concentrate on his studies, but began again after watching fellow New Zealander Rob Waddell win gold at the 2000 Olympic Games. Russell McVeagh
Russell McVeagh is a New Zealand law firm with offices in Auckland and Wellington. It is one of New Zealand's largest law firms and is ranked highly by law firm ranking guides such as ''The Legal 500'' and ''Chambers and Partners''. History John Benjamin Russell (1834–1894) established a one-man practice in Auckland in 1863. Various partners joined him before he was succeeded at the firm by his son Edward Robert Nolan Russell (1869–1939) in 1893.
