2024 Syrian Opposition Offensive
On 27 November 2024, a coalition of Syrian opposition groups called the Military Operations Command (Syria), Military Operations Command led by Tahrir al-Sham, Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and supported by allied Turkey, Turkish-backed groups in the Syrian National Army (SNA) launched an offensive against the pro-government Syrian Arab Army (SAA) forces in Idlib Governorate, Idlib, Aleppo Governorate, Aleppo and Hama Governorates in Syria. The operation was codenamed Deterrence of Aggression by HTS. This is the first time that opposition forces in the Syrian civil war launched a military offensive campaign since the Northwestern Syria offensive (December 2019 – March 2020)#Second Russia–Turkey ceasefire, March 2020 Idlib ceasefire. Southern Operations Room
The Southern Operations Room (), abbreviated as SOR, is a Syrian rebel coalition consisting of various Syrian opposition groups and defectors that initially operated in the southern provinces of Daraa, Suwayda and Quneitra, though they expanded to Damascus, and Rif Dimashq. The group withdrew from Damascus following HTS' arrival. The Southern Operations Room publicly declared their formation on 6 December 2024, to coordinate the southern Syria offensive in the 2024 Syrian opposition offensives. The group originated in the Southern Front which previously fought against the Assad regime in an earlier phase of the war. Kioumars Pourhashemi (; died 28 November 2024), also known by his ''nom de guerre'' Haji Hashem, was an Iranian military officer in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). He served as an IRGC military advisor to the Syrian Army during the Syrian civil war, and was killed in action shortly before the 2024 Battle of Aleppo. Major General Suhayl al-Hasan (; born 10 June 1970) is a Syrian military officer, formerly serving as the commander of the Syrian Army's Special Forces. He graduated from the Syrian Air Force academy in 1991, and served in many units in the Syrian Air Defence Force Command, completing several training courses. Ahmad al-Awda (), also spelled as Ahmad al-Oda, is a Syrian military officer and former rebel leader who leads the Southern Operations Room. A leader of the rebel Youth of Sunna Forces between 2014 and 2018, al-Awda reconciled with the Assad regime following the 2018 Southern Syria offensive.
