2024 Maltese Local Elections
Local council elections were held in Malta and Gozo on 8 June 2024, in tandem with the European Parliament elections. This is the second time that all local councils of Malta shall be elected simultaneously in a single election, following the 2015 reform abolishing the previous system of half-council elections. Background Previous election The Labour Party won an absolute majority of 268 local council seats and 48 mayoralties in the 2019 local elections, swiping control of several village councils from the Nationalist Party in a wave of electoral successes for said PL, most significant of all being the flip of Siġġiewi from PN to PL. Robert Abela
Robert Abela (born 7 December 1977) is a Maltese lawyer and politician who has served as prime minister of Malta and leader of Labour Party since 2020. The son of former President George Abela, he was elected to Parliament in 2017. Abela was sworn in as prime minister following the resignation of Joseph Muscat on 13 January 2020. Early life, family and professional career Born in Sliema in the Northern Harbour District, to George Abela, former President of Malta (2009–2014) and his wife Margaret (née Cauchi). Abela grew up with his sister Marija in Għaxaq and Marsaskala in the south of Malta. Their mother, Margaret, worked in the administration of the Old University in Valletta and later managed the family's law firm. People's Party (Malta)
The People's Party ( mt, Partit Popolari, PP) is a political party in Malta. Ideologically, it is right-wing populist and conservative, and it opposes immigration. History The People's Party was registered in July 2020 under the leadership of Paul Salomone, who had previously contested the 2008 election on the list of National Action. In the first annual general meeting held on 4 August 2020, Paul Salomone was confirmed leader of the party. Salomone registered the party in July 2020 and would launch the party later in November same year. In the 2022 general election, the party contested with a total of 8 candidates in all 13 districts. Cabinet Of Malta
The Cabinet of Malta is the collective decision-making body of the Government of Malta, composed of the Prime Minister and a number of ministers who are selected by the Prime Minister from the elected members of the House of Representatives to head government departments. Carmel Cacopardo
Carmel Cacopardo (born 5 March, 1956) is a Maltese people, Maltese architect, civil engineer and politician who currently serves as deputy chairperson of the AD+PD party. Cacopardo previously served as chairperson of the Democratic Alternative (Malta), Democratic Alternative party and served as chairperson of AD+PD until 2023. Biography Carmel Cacopardo was born on 5 March 1956. He's married to Miriam and the couple have two children, Martina and Dario. He lives in Kalkara, Malta. Cacopardo graduated from the University of Malta in Architecture and Civil Engineering in 1982 and in the Staffordshire University, University of Staffordshire in the United Kingdom in 2006 in the Sustainability and Environmental Management. Attard
Attard ( mt, Ħ'Attard) is a town in the Central Region, Malta, Central Region of Malta. Together with Balzan and Lija it forms part of "Three villages of Malta, the Three Villages" and has been inhabited since the Classical antiquity, Classical Period. It has a population of 12,268 as of 2021. Attard's traditional Latin motto is ''Florigera rosis halo'' ("I perfume the air with my blossoms") due to its many flower gardens and citrus orchards. Attard is abundant with public gardens. The inhabitants of Attard are known as ''saraċini''. Marlene Farrugia (born 24 July 1966) is a Malta, Maltese former Member of Parliament and former leader of the Democratic Party (Malta), Democratic Party. Democratic Alternative ( mt, Alternattiva Demokratika), sometimes referred to as AD – The Green Party, was a green political party in Malta. The party was initially founded by a coalition of former Labour Party members and environmental activists in 1989. On 1 August 2020 the party announced a plan to merge with the Democratic Party to form a new party called AD+PD. The merger was conducted on 17 October 2020. Dominic Mintoff, ( mt, Duminku Mintoff, ; often called ''il-Perit'', "the Architect"; 6 August 1916 – 20 August 2012) was a Maltese Socialist politician, architect, and civil engineer who was leader of the Labour Party from 1949 to 1984, and was 8th Prime Minister of Malta from 1955 to 1958, when Malta was still a British colony, and again, following independence, from 1971 to 1984.
