2024 Czech Regional Elections
2024 Czech regional elections will be held on 20 and 21 September 2024 to elect all 675 members of all 13 Czech regional councils. The regional elections are held together with the first round of the 2024 Czech Senate election. Voting system Elections are held in each region to elect its regional council, which is composed of 45 to 65 regional councilors, whom will elect the governor of the region. Elections are held using open list proportional representation method, with 5% threshold for both parties and coalitions in each region. The minimal age for both voting and candidacy is 18 years. Tomio Okamura
is a Czech politician and entrepreneur of Moravian Wallachian, Japanese and Korean ethnicity. He founded the Czech political parties Dawn of Direct Democracy and Freedom and Direct Democracy (SPD). Since October 2013, he has been a member of the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Republic (MP), initially for Dawn of Direct Democracy and then from May 2015 for SPD (styled "SPD – Tomio Okamura"), of which he is also leader. He previously served as an independent Senator for Zlín district from October 2012 until his election to the Chamber of Deputies a year later. He has been placed as far-right. Open List
Open list describes any variant of party-list proportional representation where voters have at least some influence on the order in which a party's candidates are elected. This is as opposed to closed list, which allows only active members, party officials, or consultants to determine the order of its candidates and gives the general voter no influence at all on the position of the candidates placed on the party list. Additionally, an open list system allows voters to select individuals rather than parties. Different systems give the voter different amounts of influence to change the default ranking. The Czech News Agency ( cs, Česká tisková kancelář), abbreviated to ČTK, is a national public service news agency in the Czech Republic. It publishes in Czech and English. It discontinued its Slovak language service on 1 January 2011. Founded on 28 October 1918, on the same day as Czechoslovakia's formation, the company has been owned by the government and used by the various regimes in the Czech lands since then. Following the Velvet Revolution of 1989, the government ceased interfering in editorial decisions. In 1993 the government relinquished control of the agency, which has since been governed by a board of seven people elected by the lower house of Parliament. Members of the board are not allowed to be politically active. The agency's state subsidy was discontinued in 1996. 2024 Czech Senate Election
Senate elections for one-third of the Senate of the Czech Republic will be held on 20 and 21 September 2024. The first round will be held alongside regional elections, with a potential second round one week later. Background This Senate election is the second and last election to the Senate happening during the term of Petr Fiala's cabinet. The parties in the government coalition and their allies will defend 22 out of 27 seats. Opposition parties hold only two seats that are up for election, while three seats up for election are held by independents. Immediately after the 2018 Senate elections, two of the candidates elected as independents joined senate groups of parliamentary parties. Kateřina Konečná
Kateřina Konečná (born 20 January 1981) is a Czech politician, who has been a Member of the European Parliament representing the Czech Republic since 2013. Since 23 October 2021 she has been the leader of the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia (KSČM). Education Konečná graduated from Masaryk University's Department of Economics and Administration in 2003. In 2009 she received a degree in engineering from the University of Finance and Administration. In 2013 Konečná obtained a law degree from Masaryk University. Political career In the 2002 parliamentary elections, Konečná was elected to the Chamber of Deputies as a non-partisan candidate for KSČM, becoming the youngest member of the house.
