2023–24 North American Winter
The 2023–24 North American winter was the warmest winter on record across the contiguous United States, with below-average snowfall primarily in the Upper Midwest and parts of the Northeastern United States. However, some areas, especially in the states of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York saw considerably more snow than the previous winter. Notable winter events were also more prevalent across the eastern half of the country this winter, including a series of winter storms in mid-January that brought snow from the South to Northeast states, a period of very cold temperatures across much of the country in mid-to-late January, and a disruptive nor'easter that affected much of the Mid-Atlantic in mid-February. 2 storms have been rated so far on the Regional Snowfall Index (RSI), although none have attained a "Major" rating (Category 3+). A strong El Niño was expected to influence the winter weather patterns across the continent. Based on the astronomical definition, wi ...

Cyclogenesis
Cyclogenesis is the development or strengthening of cyclonic circulation in the atmosphere (a low-pressure area). Cyclogenesis is an umbrella term for at least three different processes, all of which result in the development of some sort of cyclone, and at any size from the microscale to the synoptic scale. * Tropical cyclones form due to latent heat driven by significant thunderstorm activity, developing a warm core. * Extratropical cyclones form as waves along weather fronts before occluding later in their life cycle as cold core cyclones. * Mesocyclones form as warm core cyclones over land, and can lead to tornado formation. Waterspouts can also form from mesocyclones, but more often develop from environments of high instability and low vertical wind shear. The process in which an extratropical cyclone undergoes a rapid drop in atmospheric pressure (24 millibars or more) in a 24-hour period is referred to as explosive cyclogenesis, and is usually present during the formation ...

February 2024 California Atmospheric Rivers
In early February 2024, two atmospheric rivers brought extensive flooding, intense winds, and power outages to portions of California. The storms caused record-breaking rainfall totals to be observed in multiple areas, as well as the declaration of states of emergency in multiple counties in Southern California. Wind gusts of hurricane force were observed in San Francisco, along with wind gusts reaching over 100 miles per hour (160 km/h) in the Sierra Nevada. Widespread landslides occurred as a result of the storms, as well as multiple rivers overflowing due to the excessive rainfall. Meteorologist Dr. Reed Timmer stated that " Biblical flooding" was possible throughout California during the atmospheric river. Meteorological history From February 1 to February 2, 2024, California experienced the impact of the first Pineapple Express storm caused by the atmospheric river, which subsequently traversed the United States and settled over the I-25 corridor in Colorado. A ...

January 8–10, 2024 North American Storm Complex
A large and robust storm system, unofficially named ''Winter Storm Finn'' by The Weather Channel, brought widespread impacts to much of the contiguous United States early in January 2024. In the northern United States, heavy snow, hail, and gusty winds affected areas from the Great Plains to New England. In the southern United States, a widespread tornado outbreak along the Gulf Coast of the United States, Gulf Coast caused two fatalities and numerous injuries. Meteorological synopsis On January 2, 2024, meteorologists from the Storm Prediction Center began tracking a large Trough (meteorology), upper-level trough forecast to move across the United States, with multiple Shortwave (meteorology), embedded shortwave perturbations. By January 4, evidence of strong surface cyclogenesis pointed towards an intensifying and Trough (meteorology)#Positively/negatively tilted, negatively tilted trough in the south, with a strong Low-pressure area, surface-low response to the north. These ...
