Tennis
Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. The object of the game is to manoeuvre the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return. The player who is unable to return the ball validly will not gain a point, while the opposite player will. Tennis is an Olympic sport and is played at all levels of society and at all ages. The sport can be played by anyone who can hold a racket, including wheelchair users. The modern game of tennis originated in Birmingham, England, in the late 19th century as lawn tennis. Daniil Sergeyevich Medvedev (russian: Даниил Сергеевич Медведев; born 11 February 1996) is a Russian professional tennis player. He is currently ranked world No. 7 by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), and was ranked as the singles world No. 1 for 16 total weeks. Medvedev has won 15 ATP Tour singles titles, including the 2021 US Open and 2020 ATP Finals. In the former, Medvedev defeated then-world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the final to deny him the Grand Slam. Following a successful career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Hijikata went professional and has a career high ATP singles ranking of world No. 70 achieved on 16 October 2023 and in doubles of world No. 31 on the same date. 2023 Australian Open – Men's Doubles
Rinky Hijikata and Jason Kubler defeated Hugo Nys and Jan Zieliński in the final, 6–4, 7–6(7–4) to win the men's doubles tennis title at the 2023 Australian Open. Awarded a wildcard into the tournament, Hijikata and Kubler saved a match point en route to the title, in their third round match against Tomislav Brkić and Gonzalo Escobar. Nys became the first ever Monegasque player to reach the semifinal and final of a major. Cori Dionne "Coco" Gauff (born March 13, 2004) is an American professional tennis player. She has a career-high ranking of world No. 4 in singles, reached on October 24, 2022, and world No. 1 in doubles, achieved on August 15, 2022. Coco Gauff defeated Aryna Sabalenka in the final, 2–6, 6–3, 6–2 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2023 US Open. It was her first major singles title. Markéta Vondroušová defeated Ons Jabeur in the final, 6–4, 6–4 to win the ladies' singles tennis title at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships. It was her first major singles title and her first title overall in six years.
