2023 Super League Season
Super League XXVIII, known as the 2023 Betfred Super League for sponsorship reasons, was the 28th season of the Super League and 129th season of rugby league in Great Britain. The season began on 16 February 2023, and ended with the Grand Final on 14 October 2023. St Helens were the reigning champions after winning their 4th successive title, beating Leeds Rhinos in the 2022 Grand Final. They were eliminated in the semi final, losing 6–12 to Catalans Dragons. Leigh Leopards were immediately promoted back to Super League, after they beat Batley Bulldogs 44–12 in the 2022 Championship Grand Final. Wakefield Trinity were relegated from Super League after 24 years. Wigan Warriors defeated Catalans, 10–2 in the Grand Final, to win their 6th super league title, and 23rd overall. Super League
The Super League (officially known as the Betfred Super League due to sponsorship from Betfred and legally known as Super League Europe), is the top-level of the British rugby league system. At present the league consists of twelve teams, of which eleven are from Northern England, reflecting the sport's geographic heartland within the UK, and one from southern France. The Super League began in 1996, replacing the existing Rugby Football League Championship First Division, First Division and, significantly, switching from a traditional winter season to a summer season. Each team plays 27 games between February and September: 11 home games, 11 away games, Magic Weekend and an additional 4 'loop fixtures' decided by league positions. The top six then enter the Super League play-offs, play-off series leading to the Super League Grand Final, Grand Final which determines the champions. Abbas Miski
Abbas Miski (Arabic: عباس مسكي; born 25 July 1995) is a Lebanese international rugby league footballer who plays as a er for the Wigan Warriors in the Super League. He previously played for the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles in the NRL, and the North Sydney Bears and the Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles in the Canterbury Cup NSW competition. Miski has also spent time on loan from Wigan at the Newcastle Thunder in the Betfred Championship. Background Miski was born in Penrith, New South Wales, Australia, the son of Lebanese immigrants to Australia. He is Muslim. Miski played junior rugby league for the Arncliffe Scots and the Kingsgrove Colts. He played S. G. Wheldon Road (known as the Mend-A-Hose Jungle for sponsorship purposes) is the home ground of Castleford Tigers Rugby league Club in Castleford, West Yorkshire, England. It is on Wheldon Road, just outside Castleford town centre. The record attendance of 25,449 was for a Challenge Cup match in 1935. History Wheldon Road officially opened in 1926 and was the home of association football club Castleford Town F.C. The following year Castleford RLFC moved in after the completion of their first season (1926–27) after playing at 'Sandy Desert', which has since been redeveloped, and is the home of Castleford Lock Lane. Warrington Wolves
The Warrington Wolves are a professional rugby league club based in Warrington, England, that competes in the Super League. They play rugby at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, having moved there from Wilderspool in 2004. Founded as Warrington Zingari Football Club in 1876, they are one of the original twenty-two clubs that formed the Northern Rugby Football Union in 1895 and the only one that has played every season in the top flight. The Salford Red Devils are a professional rugby league club in Salford, Greater Manchester, England, who play in the Super League. Formed in 1873, they have won six Championships and one Challenge Cup. Their home ground since 2012 has been the AJ Bell Stadium in Barton-upon-Irwell, before which they played at the Willows in Weaste. Hull Kingston Rovers are a professional rugby league club based in Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire, England, that competes in the Super League, the top tier of British rugby league. Huddersfield Giants are an English professional rugby league club from Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, the birthplace of rugby league, who play in the Super League competition. Castleford Tigers
The Castleford Tigers are a professional rugby league club in Castleford, West Yorkshire, England, that compete in the Super League, the top-level professional rugby league club competition in the Northern Hemisphere. The club have competed in the top division for the majority of their existence, having only been relegated twice in their history. They have won the Challenge Cup four times. Million Pound Game
Million Pound Game (stylized as £1M Game) was an annual rugby league game that decides which Championship teams will be promoted to Super League, and which Super League teams would be relegated for the following season. Instituted in 2015 and played until 2018, the game was played as the final of The Qualifiers replacing the playoffs and Championship Grand Final. In 2019, the Championship Grand Final returned but used the "Million Pound Game" name until 2021. The name alludes to the higher level of funding Super League clubs receive. Batley is a market town in the Metropolitan Borough of Kirklees, in West Yorkshire, England.
