2023 RFL Women's Super League
The 2023 RFL Women's Super League (also known as the Betfred Women's Super League for sponsorship reasons) was the seventh season of the Women's Super League, for female players in clubs affiliated to the Rugby Football League (RFL). Leeds Rhinos were the defending champions having defeated York City Knights in the 2022 Grand Final. Since then both teams had announced that they would become semi-professional for the 2023 season and York had been rebranded as York Valkyrie. On 9 April, they faced each other at Headingley in the opening match of the 2023 season. York went unbeaten through the regular season to retain the League Leaders' Shield and defeated Leeds 16–6 in the Grand Final on 23 September. In a change from the 2022 season the 12 teams were split into two groups of six. Leeds Rhinos Women
Leeds Rhinos Women are a rugby league team based in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. The team is part of the Leeds Rhinos club and plays in the Women's Super League. They were the RFL Women's Super League champions in 2019 and 2022, and from 2023 they became the first semi-professional women's rugby league team in the UK. History The team was formed in September 2017 with the aid of the Leeds Rhinos Foundation. In December 2017 Rhino's forward, Adam Cuthbertson was appointed coach and Lois Forsell was named as captain in March 2018. In the team's first season, they won the Women's Challenge Cup beating Castleford Tigers 20–14 in the final, at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, on 4 August 2018. Caitlin Beevers
Caitlin Beevers (born 11 October 2001) is a professional rugby league footballer and referee. She plays for Leeds Rhinos Women, Leeds Rhinos either at or . Playing career Beevers was a pupil at St John Fisher Catholic Voluntary Academy in Dewsbury and was a member of the school's team that won the Year Eleven, Year 11 Nation Schools in 2017. In the final Beevers scored 38 points (5 tries and 9 goals) in a 66–0 victory over The Academy at Shotton Hall, Shotton Hall of Peterlee. At club level Beevers started her playing career at Birstall Victoria ARLFC as a 7 year old. Amy Hardcastle
Amy Hardcastle (born 4 March 1989) is an English rugby league player who plays at for St Helens in the Betfred Women's Super League. Born in Halifax, West Yorkshire, Hardcastle first played rugby league for Siddal before taking time away from the game after having her daughter. On her return Siddal had disbanded their women's team so Hardcastle joined Bradford Bulls. Over the next 10 years Hardcastle experienced considerable success as Bradford won the league title twice and the Challenge Cup once. In 2020 Hardcastle left Bradford to join St Helens but did not make her first appearance for St Helens until 2021 as the 2020 season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In her first full season with St Helens, Hardcastle scored 23 tries in just 13 appearances. Rugby League Positions
A rugby league team consists of thirteen players on the field, with 4 substitutes on the bench. Each of the thirteen players is assigned a position, normally with a standardised number, which reflects their role in attack and defence, although players can take up any position at any time. Players are divided into two general types, forwards and backs. Forwards are generally chosen for their size and strength. They are expected to run with the ball, to attack, and to make tackles. Forwards are required to improve the team's field position thus creating space and time for the backs. Backs are usually smaller and faster, though a big, fast player can be of advantage in the backs. Their roles require speed and ball-playing skills, rather than just strength, to take advantage of the field position gained by the forwards. Totally Wicked Stadium
Totally Wicked Stadium is a rugby league stadium in the Peasley Cross area of St. Helens. Known as Langtree Park until 2017, it has a capacity of over 18,000 and is the home ground of St Helens R.F.C. The stadium was granted full planning permission on 20 May 2008. On 11 July 2008 the go-ahead was given without the need for a public enquiry and construction started in 2010. The first rugby league match to be played at the stadium was between St. Helens and Widnes on Friday 20 January 2012. St. Helens won the opening game by 42–24 and they moved in ready for the 2012 Super League season. Liverpool F.C. U18s also play their home games at the stadium. Golden Point
The golden point, a sudden death overtime system, is used to resolve drawn football matches. The term is borrowed from soccer's now-defunct golden goal. Rugby league Australia The golden point is used to determine a winner (where applicable, see below) when scores are level at the end of regular time. Before its introduction in Australia's National Rugby League competition, normal season games were left as draws; in finals matches, 20 minutes extra time ensued (10 minutes each way), with a replay in the event of a draw. If the scores are level at the end of 80 minutes, 5 minutes are played, the teams swap ends with no break, and a further 5 minutes are played. Tara-Jane Stanley is an English rugby league footballer who plays as a for York Valkyrie in the Womens Super League. She has played at representative level for England, and club level for Thatto Heath Crusaders and Castleford Tigers Women. She was in the running for the inaugural Woman of Steel award in 2018, but lost out to Castleford Tigers teammate Georgia Roche. Stanley began her rugby career playing for Moorfield Angels. St Helens Women
The rugby league club St Helens R.F.C. have operated a women's team since they took some women from Thatto Heath Crusaders, and other women's sides in 2017 ahead of the 2018 season. They won four successive Challenge Cups from 2013 to 2016, and again from 2021–2024. The 2016 win formed part of their treble winning season. The side won the 2021 Women's Challenge Cup after beating York City Knights, adding to the four cup titles won as Thatto Heath. That season, they also completed the treble for the second time. In 2024 the club announced it would become semi-professional, and start making match payments to players, becoming the third British side to do so after Leeds and York who started the season prior. York Community Stadium
York Community Stadium (known for sponsorship purposes as the LNER Community Stadium) is a multi-purpose stadium in Huntington, North Yorkshire, Huntington, York, England. It is owned by City of York Council, and is shared by York City F.C., York City Football Club and York City Knights, York City Knights Rugby League Football Club. The capacity of the all-seater stadium is 8,500.
