2023 Pittsburgh Pirates Season
The 2023 Pittsburgh Pirates season was the franchise's 142nd season overall, 137th season as a member of the National League, and 23rd season at PNC Park. The season was notable for the Pirates as it featured the return of Andrew McCutchen, who re-signed with the team after spending his first nine seasons with Pittsburgh before being traded following the 2017 season. Despite starting with a record of 20–9, they would regress later in the season, enduring multiple losing streaks and going 56–77 the rest of the way, resulting in them failing to make the playoffs after a 7-year absence, or win the National League Central for the first time. The team however did improve upon their 62–100 record from the previous season and earned their best record since 2018. National League Central
The National League Central is one of Major League Baseball's six divisions. This division was created in 1994, by moving two teams from the National League West (the Cincinnati Reds and the Houston Astros) and three teams from the National League East (the Chicago Cubs, the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the St. Louis Cardinals). However, the Braves, wanting to form a natural rivalry with the expansion Florida Marlins, requested to remain in the East. Despite the Marlins offering to go to the Central, the Pirates instead gave up their spot in the East to the Braves. Since then, the Pirates have tried several times unsuccessfully to be placed back in the East. In 1998, the NL Central became the largest division in Major League Baseball when the Milwaukee Brewers were moved in from the American League Central. In 2013, the ...

On December 2, 2021, Commissioner of Baseball Rob Manfred announced a lockout of players, following expiration of the collective bargaining agreement (CBA) between the league and the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA). On March 10, 2022, MLB and the MLBPA agreed to a new collective bargaining agreement, thus ending the lockout. Opening Day was played on April 7. Although MLB previously announced that several series would be cancelled due to the lockout, the agreement provides for a 162-game season, with originally canceled games to be made up via doubleheaders. The Pirates set a major league record during the season: most games to start a season without a victory for the starting Pirates pitcher, who did not record a win until May 9, the 28th game of the season.
