2023 Omani General Election
General elections were held in Oman on 29 October 2023. As the country is an absolute monarchy, the legislature is a purely advisory body. Electoral system The 90 members of the Consultative Assembly are elected from a mix of one- and two-member constituencies based on the 61 provinces; provinces with a population of under 30,000 elect one member while those with a population of over 30,000 elect two. Political parties are banned, meaning all candidates run on a non-partisan basis. The elections were fully digitized. Campaign According to the final electoral lists, 843 candidates, including 32 women, competed in these elections to choose the 90 members of the Shura Council, while the total number of registered voters reached 753,690. Omani nationals living abroad cast their votes electronically. Results Two thirds of elected members were new members. No female candidates were elected. Absolute monarchy (or Absolutism as a doctrine) is a form of monarchy in which the monarch rules in their own right or power. Consultative Assembly (Oman)
The Consultative Assembly ( ar, مجلس الشورى; transcription: ''Majlis al-Shura'') is the lower house of the Council of Oman. It is the only legislative body in Oman of which all members are democratically elected. The other chamber of the parliament is the Council of State (''Majlis al-Dawla''). The assembly consists of 86 elected members. Each wilayah (province) in Oman is entitled to at least one representative in the assembly. Provinces with a population of 30,000 or above are represented by two members, while provinces with fewer than 30,000 inhabitants are represented by only one member. The winning candidates are the ones who obtain the higher number of votes according to the official election results. Oman does not allow political parties. Saba News Agency
The Saba News Agency (SABA), also known as the Yemen News Agency, is the official state news agency of Yemen. History and profile SABA was founded on 16 November 1970 as the official news agency of North Yemen, and is headquartered in the capital Sana'a. On 22 May 1990, the agency was merged with the Aden News Agency (ANA) of South Yemen to create the Yemen News Agency Saba. The agency provides news on the Middle East and region. It is a member of the Federation of Arab News Agencies (FANA). Yemeni Civil War On 19 January 2015, the Houthis seized the agency. The Politics of Oman take place in a framework of an absolute monarchy, where the Sultan of Oman is both head of state and head of government. The Sultan is hereditary, who appoints a cabinet to assist him. The sultan also serves as the supreme commander of the armed forces and prime minister. Monarchy The Sultan is a direct descendant of Sayyid Sa'id bin Sultan, who first opened relations with the United States in 1833. The Sultanate has neither political parties nor legislature, although the bicameral representative bodies provide the government with advice.
