2023 Mexican Gubernatorial Elections
The 2023 Mexican local elections, held on 4 June 2022, saw voters electing two governors for six-year terms and deputies for one state congress. In the gubernatorial elections, Morena (political party), Morena flipped one state, while the Institutional Revolutionary Party defended its gubernatorial seat. Notably, Delfina Gómez Álvarez () defeated Alejandra del Moral Vela () in the state of Mexico, ending 94 years of PRI rule in the state. Morena (political Party)
MORENA () is a major Mexican left-wing political party. It is described as an anti-neoliberal and populist party. It is the ruling party of Mexico since 2018. The name is an acronym for the Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (National Regeneration Movement), and means brown-skinned in Spanish. It also alludes to Mexico's Catholic national patroness: the Virgin of Guadalupe, known as 'La Morena'.
