2023 LCS Season
The 2023 LCS season was the 11th season of the League Championship Series (LCS), a North American professional esports league for the video game ''League of Legends''. The season was divided into two splits: Spring and Summer. The Spring Split began on January 26, 2023, and culminated with the Spring Split Finals on April 9, 2023. The Summer Split began on June 14, 2023, and culminated with the LCS Championship Final on August 20, 2023. Prior to the end of the spring split playoffs, NRG Esports acquired Counter Logic Gaming's franchise slot. Just before the original planned start of the Summer Split, most LCS franchises ended their Challenger programs, leaving many pro players without teams. In response, the LCS Players Association threatened a walkout. Riot Games, the governing body of LCS, responded by delaying the Summer Split by two weeks for negotiations. League Championship Series (esports)
The League Championship Series (LCS) is the top level of professional ''League of Legends'' in the United States and Canada. The esports league is run by Riot Games and has ten franchise teams. Each annual season of competition is divided into two splits, spring and summer, which conclude with a double-elimination tournament between the top eight teams. At the end of the season, the winner, runners-up and third-place team of the summer playoffs qualify for the annual ''League of Legends'' World Championship. With the exception of some touring events, all games of the LCS are played live at Riot Games' studios in Los Angeles, California. In addition to a small studio audience, all games are streamed live in several languages on Twitch and YouTube, with broadcasts regularly attracting over 300,000 viewers. FlyQuest
FlyQuest is a professional esports organization based in the United States that was founded on January 6, 2017. It is owned by the Viola family, owners of the Florida Panthers. FlyQuest was originally founded after the acquisition of the ''League of Legends'' roster of Cloud9 Challenger, which was the sister team of the Cloud9 organization. Cloud9 Challenger qualified for the North American League Championship Series in August 2016, alongside the main Cloud9 roster. LCS rules forbid an organization from owning multiple teams in the same league, so the team was sold to Milwaukee Bucks co-owner Wesley Edens and Fortress Investment Group and rebranded to FlyQuest, with the team roster unchanged. Tricia Sugita was appointed to become the CEO in 2020, while Ryan Edens would move to a president position. She left the team on 13 June 2022, later becoming the Chief Marketing Officer for Cloud9. Jo Yong-in ( ko, 조용인), better known as CoreJJ, is a South Korean ''League of Legends'' player who is the support for Team Liquid of the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS). He won the 2017 World Championship with Samsung Galaxy. He was named MVP of the 2020 LCS Summer Split. He received his green card in February 2022. Trevor Hayes, better known as Stixxay, is an American professional ''League of Legends'' player for Golden Guardians. Stixxay started his League of Legends professional career as the starting ADC for CLG's Challenger NA team CLG Black and substitute ADC for LA Renegades, Misfits. In the 2015 Spring Challenger Series, CLG Black and Stixxay finished 2–8. In November 2015 he was elevated to the main team, replacing Peter "Doublelift" Peng as bot laner. In January 2022 he stepped down as a player and transferred to a coaching role at Golden Guardians. Eric Ritchie, better known as Licorice, is a Canadian professional ''League of Legends'' player for Golden Guardians of the League Championship Series (LCS). Prior to competing in the LCS, Ritchie played for LCS Challenger teams, such as Cloud9 Challenger and Team eUnited. Ritchie signed with Cloud9 ahead of the 2018 NA LCS season; in his rookie season, he was won the league's Rookie of the Split award and reached the semifinals at the 2018 League of Legends World Championship. Choi Jae-hyun ( ko, 최재현), better known as huhi, is a South Korean professional ''League of Legends'' player for Golden Guardians of the LCS. Career Huhi joined his first major team in North America when he became a member of Counter Logic Gaming in 2015. As CLG's mid laner, Huhi and his teammates won the 2016 NA LCS Spring Split Finals against Team SoloMid. He went on to place second at the 2016 Mid-Season Invitational. Jesper Svenningsen (born 24 June 1997), better known as Zven (formerly Niels), is a Danish professional ''League of Legends'' player for Cloud9. He previously played for Team SoloMid, G2 Esports, Origen, and SK Gaming Prime. He had played for Origen and finished at 2015 Worlds semifinals. Jeong Eon-yeong ( ko, 정언영), better known as Impact, is a South Korean ''League of Legends'' player for FlyQuest of the League of Legends Championship Series (LCS). Impact won the Season 3 League of Legends World Championship as a member of SK Telecom T1 K. He played for both Team Impulse and NRG Esports in the LCS, before transferring to Cloud9 in May 2016. Impact left Cloud9 after the 2017 season and joined Team Liquid, where he won four LCS titles before departing the team for Evil Geniuses after the end of the 2020 season. Philippe Laflamme, better known as Vulcan, is a Canadian professional ''League of Legends'' support for Evil Geniuses, in the League Championship Series (LCS). Previously, Vulcan has played for Cloud9 as well as Clutch Gaming, the team that drafted him. Professional career Clutch Gaming Vulcan was invited to the LCS proving grounds following the 2018 season, in which he showcased his skills, as well as his communication and teamwork.
