2023 Khakas Head Election
The 2023 Khakassia head election took place on 8–10 September 2023, on common election day, coinciding with 2023 Khakassia Supreme Council election. Incumbent Head Valentin Konovalov was elected to a second term in office. Background Communist Abakan City Council Member Valentin Konovalov won 44.81% and unexpectedly bested incumbent Head of the Republic of Khakassia Viktor Zimin, who took 32.42% of the vote, in September 2018. Prior to the second round all candidates, except Konovalov, withdrew, so in an unprecedented single-candidate election Valentin Konovalov was elected Head of the republic with 57.6%. At the age of 31, Konovalov also became one of the youngest governors in Russia. United Russia also lost its majority in the simultaneous Supreme Council election. Valentin Olegovich Konovalov (russian: Валенти́н Оле́гович Конова́лов; born November 30, 1987) is a Russian politician who has served as the Head of the Republic of Khakassia, Head of Khakassia since 2018. He was a local politician before assuming the office. A member of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation, Communist Party, he was supported by the right-wing Liberal Democratic Party of Russia, LDPR in his 2018 Khakas head election, successful bid to unseat the incumbent head Viktor Zimin (politician), Viktor Zimin of the ruling United Russia party, highlighting a rise in 2017–2018 Russian protests, anti-establishment sentiment in the country during the period. 2021 Russian Legislative Election
Legislative elections were held in Russia from 17 to 19 September 2021. At stake were 450 seats in the 8th convocation of the State Duma, the lower house of the Federal Assembly. Going into the elections, United Russia was the ruling party after winning the 2016 elections with 343 of the 450 seats, and retaining a supermajority. In March 2020, it was proposed to hold a snap election in September 2020 due to proposed constitutional reforms, but this idea was abandoned. On 18 June 2021 Vladimir Putin signed a decree calling the election for 19 September the same year. Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic in Russia, voting in the election lasted for three days, from 17 to 19 September. Final turnout was reported to be 51.72%. Fifteen political parties applied for participation, 14 of which were guaranteed automatic access to the ballots, and one unsuccessfully attempted to be included in the ballot by collecting voters' signatures. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) is a United States–based think tank founded in 2007 by Kimberly Kagan, providing research and analysis regarding issues of defense and foreign affairs. It has produced reports on the Syrian War, the War in Afghanistan, and the Iraq War, "focusing on military operations, enemy threats, and political trends in diverse conflict zones". It currently publishes daily reports on the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. ''Meduza'' ( rus, Медуза, t=jellyfish) is a Russian- and English-language independent news website, headquartered in Riga. It was founded in 2014 by a group of former employees of the then-independent ''Lenta.ru'' news website. Free mobile applications for iOS, Windows Phone and Android became the basis of the media. A semi-official motto of the portal is "Make the Kremlin sad". History In 2014, Galina Timchenko was fired from her job as chief editor at ''Lenta.ru'' by oligarch Alexander Mamut, a supporter of Vladimir Putin, after she had interviewed Right Sector. Andrey Anatolyevich Turchak (russian: Андрей Анатольевич Турчак; born 20 December 1975) is a Russian politician who has served Secretary of the General Council of United Russia from 12 October 2017 and the Senator from Pskov Oblast from 2 November 2017. Previously, he was the fifth Governor of Pskov Oblast (2009–2017) and Senator from the Pskov Oblast (2007–2009). By being appointed as Governor at the age of 33, he became one of Russia's youngest governors. In 2013, Alexei Navalny released documents showing that Turchak had neglected to declare a $1.7 million villa that he had purchased in France, an illegal omission under Russian law.
