2023 Serbian Election Protests
On 18 December 2023, a series of mass protests began in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, after the 2023 Serbian parliamentary election, parliamentary and 2023 Belgrade City Assembly election, Belgrade City Assembly elections on 17 December. The protests were organised by the opposition Serbia Against Violence (coalition), Serbia Against Violence (SPN) coalition, the Students Against Violence (later Struggle) youth organisation, and the ProGlas initiative. According to monitoring and non-governmental organisations, such as CeSID, CRTA, and the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, the election day was marked with electoral fraud, with irregularities such as vote buying, ballot-box stuffing, Bulgarian train, and group voting occurring. Preference Falsification
Preference falsification is the act of misrepresenting a preference under perceived public pressures. It involves the selection of a publicly expressed preference that differs from the underlying privately held preference (or simply, a public preference at odds with one’s private preference). People frequently convey to each other preferences that differ from what they would communicate privately under credible cover of anonymity (such as in opinion surveys to researchers or pollsters). Vote buying (also referred to as electoral clientelism and patronage politics) occurs when a political party or candidate distributes money or resources to a voter in an upcoming election with the expectation that the voter votes for the actor handing out monetary rewards. Vote buying can take various forms such as a monetary exchange, as well as an exchange for necessary goods or services. This practice is often used to incentivise or persuade voters to turn out to elections and vote in a particular way. Although this practice is illegal in many countries such as the United States, Argentina, Mexico, Kenya, Brazil and Nigeria, its prevalence remains worldwide. Radomir Lazović ( sr-cyrl, Радомир Лазовић; born 1980) is a Serbian activist, politician, and a designer. A member of the left-wing Do not let Belgrade drown (NDB) organisation, he has served as a member of the National Assembly (Serbia), National Assembly of Serbia since 1 August 2022. Born in Belgrade, he studied at the Ninth Belgrade Gymnasium and the University of Belgrade. A designer who worked as an art and technical director, he entered the art scene in 2010. He co-founded the "Street Gallery" initiative, with whom he organised art exhibitions, and the "Ministry of Space" collective, where he dealt with urban and cultural policies of Belgrade. He also organised actions with the "Cinemas – the return of the written off" informal group that re-opened several abandoned cinemas in Belgrade in 2014. Majority Government
A majority government is a government by one or more governing parties that hold an absolute majority of seats in a legislature. This is as opposed to a minority government, where the largest party in a legislature only has a plurality of seats. A government majority determines the balance of power. A majority government is usually assured of having its legislation passed and rarely if ever, has to fear being defeated in parliament, a state is also known as a working majority. In contrast, a minority government must constantly bargain for support from other parties in order to pass legislation and avoid being defeated on motions of no confidence. Serbian Progressive Party
The Serbian Progressive Party ( sr-cyrl, Српска напредна странка, Srpska napredna stranka, SNS) has been the ruling political party of Serbia since 2012. Founded by Tomislav Nikolić and Aleksandar Vučić in 2008 as a split from the far-right Serbian Radical Party (SRS), the SNS served in opposition to the Democratic Party (DS) for the next several years. Running on an anti-corruption platform, it managed a strong performance in the 2009 Belgrade local elections, and in the same year, became the strongest opposition party.
