2023 French Open
The 2023 French Open was a Grand Slam tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts. It was held at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France, from 28 May to 11 June 2023, comprising singles, doubles and mixed doubles play. Junior and wheelchair tournaments were also played. Tyra Caterina Grant
Tyra Caterina Grant is an American tennis player. She won the girls' doubles titles at the 2023 French Open and the 2024 Australian Open. Early and personal life Born and raised in Italy, Grant is the daughter of American former basketball player Tyrone Grant who relocated to Italy to play basketball and Cinzia Giovinco, an Italian model. She trained at the Riccardo Piatti Academy in Bordighera, before later moving to Orlando, Florida to train with the United States Tennis Association. She has a younger brother called Tyson who is also a tennis player. Her mother also acts as her manager. Casper Ruud
Casper Ruud (born 22 December 1998) is a Norwegian professional tennis player. Ruud has a career-high singles ranking of world No. 2, achieved on 12 September 2022, making him the highest-ranked Norwegian tennis player in history. He has won nine ATP Tour singles titles, eight of which were on clay courts. Ruud is the first Norwegian man to win an ATP singles title, to reach major finals (at the 2022 French Open and US Open finals), to reach a Masters 1000 final, and to enter the top 20 in the ATP rankings. 2023 French Open – Men's Singles
Novak Djokovic defeated Casper Ruud in the final, 7–6(7–1), 6–3, 7–5 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2023 French Open. It was his third French Open title and his record-breaking 23rd men's singles major title overall, surpassing the record he previously held jointly with Rafael Nadal. With the victory, Djokovic became the first man to achieve a triple career Grand Slam, and became the oldest French Open champion at the age of 36 years and 20 days. Nadal was the reigning champion, but withdrew due to a left hip injury. This was the first time the 14-time champion missed the tournament since his debut in 2005. With his withdrawal, Nadal fell out of the top 100 of the ATP rankings for the first time since 2003. The French Open (french: Internationaux de France de tennis), also known as Roland-Garros (), is a major tennis tournament held over two weeks at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France, beginning in late May each year. The tournament and venue are named after the French aviator Roland Garros. Clay Court
A clay court is one of the types of tennis court on which the sport of tennis, originally known as "lawn tennis", is played. Clay courts are made of crushed stone, brick, shale, or other unbound mineral aggregate depending on the tournament. The French Open uses clay courts, the only Grand Slam tournament to do so. Clay courts are more common in Continental Europe and Latin America than in North America, Asia-Pacific or Britain. Two main types exist: red clay, the more common variety, and green clay, also known as "rubico", which is a harder surface. Although less expensive to construct than other types of tennis courts, the maintenance costs of clay are high as the surface must be rolled to preserve flatness. Andrew David Lapthorne (born 11 October 1990) is a British wheelchair tennis player. He took up wheelchair tennis in 2005, and entered the quad division in 2008. He is active in both singles and doubles tournaments, and has 13 multiple grand slam titles in singles and doubles. He competed at his first Summer Paralympics at London 2012 in the quad singles and in the quad doubles, in which he won a silver medal and is now a three-time Paralympic medallist and British no.1 Quad tennis player, who started playing wheelchair tennis at the age of ten. Kgothatso Montjane
Kgothatso Montjane (born 3 June 1986) is a South African wheelchair tennis player. In 2018, she became the first black South African woman to compete at Wimbledon. Early life Montjane was born in Seshego on the periphery of Polokwane, Limpopo with a congenital disorder which affected both of her hands and a foot with the other foot being amputated by the age of 12. Career Montjane is a successful wheelchair tennis player who is placed in the top 10 of the ITF ranking. Her highest rank was 5 in the world in 2005. Yui Kamiji
is a Japanese wheelchair tennis player. She has won 26 major titles, as well as a Paralympic silver and bronze medal in singles and doubles, respectively, at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. She also won a bronze medal in singles at the 2016 Rio Paralympics. Partnering Jordanne Whiley, Kamiji achieved the Grand Slam in doubles in 2014, and also won the Wheelchair Tennis Masters in doubles. Kamiji is the current Wheelchair Tennis Masters champion and is a former junior version. Gordon Reid (tennis)
Gordon "Gio" Reid (born 2 October 1991) is a British professional wheelchair tennis player. He is ranked world No. 4 in singles and world No. 1 in doubles. He is a Paralympic gold, silver, and bronze medalist, two-time Grand Slam singles champion, and nineteen-time Grand Slam doubles champion. He has competed for Great Britain at the Summer Paralympics when tennis made its first appearance at Beijing 2008. He reached the quarterfinals in the singles in London 2012 as well as the quarterfinals in doubles. He won Paralympic gold in the men's singles event at Rio 2016 and silver in the doubles event with partner Alfie Hewett, whom he beat in the singles final. Alfie Hewett
Alfie Hewett (born 6 December 1997) is a British wheelchair tennis player. He is the current world No. 1 in doubles, and a former world No. 1 in singles. Hewett is a 21-time major champion, having won six titles in singles and 15 in doubles, the latter all partnering Gordon Reid. The pair completed the Grand Slam in 2021, becoming the first to do so in wheelchair men's doubles since Stéphane Houdet in 2014. Hewett is also a three-time Paralympic silver medalist, and won the Wheelchair Tennis Masters in both singles and doubles in 2017. Hewett was born with a congenital heart defect that required surgery at six months, and also suffered from Legg–Calvé–Perthes disease, a condition that inhibits blood flow from the pelvis to the hip joint. His ability to walk has been severely impaired and he has been using a wheelchair since being six years old.
