2023 Ecuadorian Local Elections
The 2023 Ecuadorian local elections were held on 5 February 2023, alongside the 2023 Ecuadorian constitutional referendum. These elections determined 23 prefects, 23 vice-prefects, 221 mayors, 868 urban councilors, 437 rural councilors, and 4,084 principal members of the parish councils. The previous elections were held in 2019. The results were widely hailed, alongside the rejection of all constitutional referendum questions, as a rebuke of President Guillermo Lasso, who had won the 2021 Ecuadorian general election. They were also seen as a major victory for leftist politician and former President Rafael Correa, whose Citizen Revolution Movement party won nearly every key race, including the mayoral races in both Quito and Guayaquil, with this last city having been a longtime stronghold of the right (and, most specifically, the Social Christian Party) until then. 2023 Ecuadorian Constitutional Referendum
A constitutional referendum was held in Ecuador on 5 February 2023, alongside local elections. The binding consultation was called on 29 November 2022 by President Guillermo Lasso. Voters were asked to approve or reject a total of eight questions surrounding changes to the Constitution of Ecuador. Soon after the referendum, '' Reuters'', ''Al Jazeera'', '' CNN en Español'' and the '' Financial Times'' projected the failure of all eight of its proposals, with president Guillermo Lasso eventually conceding defeat. Turnout for the referendum was estimated at 80.74%. Ecuadorian Security Crisis
Since around 2018, Ecuador has suffered a security crisis resulting from conflicts between criminal organizations with connections to drug trafficking. In recent years, coca leaf production has risen in neighboring Colombia and Peru, with both cocaine and coca base entering Ecuador by land and leaving by sea. Puerto López
Puerto López (16,000 inhabitants) is a small fishing village set in an arched bay on the Pacific coast in the Ecuadorian Manabí Province. Puerto Lopéz is the Machalilla National Park headquarters. The main industries include fishing and ecotourism. The street closest to the beach has many restaurants, cabanas that provide drinks, and some nightclubs. Assassination Of Omar Menéndez
On 4 February 2023, Omar Menéndez, a 41-year-old Ecuadorian man who was running as the Citizen Revolution Movement party's candidate for mayor in the Cantons of Ecuador, canton of Puerto López Canton, Puerto López, Manabí Province in the 2023 Ecuadorian local elections, was shot and killed by two unidentified men just a few hours before the ballots were officially opened. Three other people were injured in the same shooting, including a 16-year-old volunteer, who eventually died from complications after being taken to the hospital. The Social Christian Party ( es, Partido Social Cristiano; PSC) is a centre-right political party in Ecuador. The party was founded in 1951 under the name of Social Christian Movement (''Movimiento Social Cristiano'') by Camilo Ponce Enríquez, who was Ecuador's president from 1956 to 1960, and Sixto Durán Ballén.
