2022 World Para Swimming Championships
The 2022 World Para Swimming Championships was the 11th edition of the World Para Swimming Championships, an international swimming competition for athletes with a disability. It was held in Madeira from 12 to 18 June. The competition was originally scheduled to be held in 2021, however, it was moved to the summer of 2022 due to the postponement of the Paralympic Games in Tokyo from 2020 to 2021. The event featured 488 athletes from 59 countries. Participating nations Russia and Belarus were banned from attending all international competitions due to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. Simone Barlaam
Simone Barlaam (born 12 July 2000) is an Italian Paralympic swimmer who competes in international level events. He is a thirteen time World champion and eight time European champion. He competed at the 2020 Summer Paralympics, winning a gold medal. Personal life Barlaam was born with a coxa vara and congenital hypoplasia in his right femur which means that his right leg doesn't develop resulting in his right leg shorter than his left leg. This was caused by doctors who performed a podalic version procedure while he was in utero but his leg broke which doctors knew nothing about. During his childhood, he went through thirteen surgeries to correct his right leg. Nicolas-Guy Turbide (born January 12, 1997) is a Canadian Paralympic swimmer who has albinism. He is a two-time Paralympic medallist, a Commonwealth Games champion, a triple Parapan American Games champion and a World silver medallist in the 100m backstroke. Alexander "Alec" Robert Elliot (born July 5, 1996) is a Canadian competitive Paralympic swimmer. Early life Elliot began swimming at the age of seven years old with the Region of Waterloo Swim Club. After swimming for a year, he took three years off and pursued his interest in minor soccer. At the age of 12, he decided to return to competitive swimming. Elliot was born with a congenital hand and foot impairment, called Syndactyly, which qualified him for a Para-swimming classification of S10 (classification), S10, SB9 and SM10 disability classifications from the International Paralympic Committee (IPC).
