2022 West Dunbartonshire Council Election
The 2022 West Dunbartonshire Council election was held on Thursday 5 May 2022, on the same day as the 31 other local authorities in Scotland. The election used the six wards created under the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004, with 22 councillors being elected. Each ward elected either 3 or 4 members, using the STV electoral system. West Dunbartonshire Council
West or Occident is one of the four cardinal directions or points of the compass. It is the opposite direction from east and is the direction in which the Sunset, Sun sets on the Earth. Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004
The Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004 (asp 9) is an Act of the Scottish Parliament which provided, amongst other things, for the election of councillors to the local authorities in Scotland by the single transferable vote system. Single Transferable Vote
Single transferable vote (STV) is a multi-winner electoral system in which voters cast a single vote in the form of a ranked-choice ballot. Voters have the option to rank candidates, and their vote may be transferred according to alternate preferences if their preferred candidate is eliminated, so that their vote is used to elect someone they prefer over others in the running. STV aims to approach proportional representation based on votes cast in the district where it is used, so that each vote is worth about the same as another. 2017 West Dunbartonshire Council Election
The 2017 West Dunbartonshire Council election was held on Thursday 4 May 2017, on the same day as the 31 other local authorities in Scotland. The election used the six wards created under the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004, with 22 Councillors being elected. Each ward will elect either 3 or 4 members, using the STV electoral system. Following the 2012 election a Labour majority administration was formed. After this election, the SNP group and Councillor Denis Agnew formed a minority coalition administration, led by the SNP leader, Jonathan McColl. As part of the deal, the title of bailie was revived, and Councillor Agnew was appointed as West Dunbartonshire's first. Lomond is one of the six wards used to elect members of the West Dunbartonshire Council. It elects three Councillors. The ward covers the northern parts of the Vale of Leven closest to Loch Lomond and the rural area east of the loch, including Balloch, Gartocharn, Jamestown, Levenvale, Mill of Haldane, Rosshead and Tullichewan. Leven (ward)
Leven is one of the six wards used to elect members of the West Dunbartonshire Council. It elects four Councillors. The ward covers the southern parts of the Vale of Leven including Alexandria, Bonhill, Dalmonach and Renton, plus northern parts of Dumbarton: streets north/west of Townend Road including the modern Lomondgate development and Broadmeadow Industrial Estate, and the entire Bellsmyre area. Jim Bollan
Jim Bollan (born c. 1950) is a councillor in West Dunbartonshire, representing the West Dunbartonshire Community Party. Until 2016 he was a member of the Scottish Socialist Party (SSP), having been the only elected representative from that party left in Scotland. Political career Bollan, at one time a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain, was elected as a Labour councillor for Renton and Alexandria South ward in 1988, later becoming the party group leader on Dumbarton District Council. He was elected as an Independent representative on West Dunbartonshire Council in the 1999 local elections, defeating Labour and Scottish National Party (SNP) opponents. He went on to join the SSP and was re-elected in 2003, defeating an SNP opponent. Dumbarton is one of the six wards used to elect members of the West Dunbartonshire Council. It elects four Councillors. Clydebank Central (ward)
Clydebank Central is one of the six wards used to elect members of the West Dunbartonshire Council. It elects four Councillors. The ward covers northern parts of the town of Clydebank, although despite its name it only includes part of the town centre, namely the areas north of the Forth and Clyde Canal at the Clyde Shopping Centre, Clyde Retail Park and Clydebank Business Centre, while south of the canal is within the Clydebank Waterfront ward. West of Boquhanran Road tunnel, the boundary between the wards changes from the canal to the Argyle Line / North Clyde Line railway tracks. Clydebank Waterfront (ward)
Clydebank Waterfront is one of the six wards used to elect members of the West Dunbartonshire Council. It elects four Councillors. The ward covers southern parts of the town of Clydebank close to the River Clyde including part of the town centre, namely the areas south of the Forth and Clyde Canal around Chalmers Street and Glasgow Road (with the bus station and Clydebank railway station), while everything north of the canal at that point is within the Clydebank Central ward.
