2022 Tasmanian Legislative Council Periodic Election
Periodic elections for the Tasmanian Legislative Council were held on 7 May 2022. Two seats were up for a regularly scheduled vote; Elwick and McIntyre. Simultaneously a by-election was held in the seat of Huon, following the resignation of the incumbent member Bastian Seidel. Elwick Josh Willie of the Labor Party was the incumbent candidate and was re-elected. McIntyre Independent Tania Rattray was the incumbent candidate and was re-elected. Huon by-election The by-election was triggered by the resignation of Bastian Seidel of the Labor Party, which took effect on 3 December 2021. The seat was won by Independent candidate Dean Harriss. Tasmanian Legislative Council
The Tasmanian Legislative Council is the upper house of the Parliament of Tasmania in Australia. It is one of the two chambers of the Parliament, the other being the House of Assembly. Both houses sit in Parliament House in the state capital, Hobart. Members of the Legislative Council are often referred to as MLCs. The Legislative Council has 15 members elected using preferential voting in 15 single-member electorates. Each electorate has approximately the same number of electors. A review of Legislative Council division boundaries is required every 9 years; the most recent was completed in 2017. Election of members in the Legislative Council are staggered. Elections alternate between three divisions in one year and in two divisions the next year. Elections take place on the first Saturday in May. The term of each MLC is six years. Electoral Division Of McIntyre
The electoral division of McIntyre is one of the fifteen electorates in the Tasmanian Legislative Council, it includes Flinders Island, the northern east coast of Tasmania, and regional areas south and west of Launceston. It is named after Margaret McIntyre, who was the first woman to be elected into the Parliament of Tasmania in 1948. There were temporarily two representatives for the single-member division of McIntyre until 2018. The next scheduled periodic election will be held in 2022. History and electoral profile The division was created following the 2016–17 Legislative Council redistribution process. The new name of McIntyre was adopted to avoid confusion because of the significant changes made to the electoral boundaries in the region. Electoral Division Of Huon
The Electoral division of Huon is one of the 15 electoral divisions in the Tasmanian Legislative Council. It was created in 1999, however similar electorates of this name have existed since 1900, and members of the Tasmanian upper house for this region appear to have been elected since 1856. The total area of the division is since a redistribution in August 2017. As of 31 January 2019, there were 25,335 enrolled voters in the division. The current sitting member of the division is Dean Harris, elected in the 2022 by-election. The next periodic election in the division is due in May 2026. The division includes the local municipalities of Huon Valley and Kingborough. Localities include Huonville, Margate, Cygnet, Franklin, Geeveston, Bruny Island, Snug, and Howden. Bastian Seidel
Bastian Manfred Seidel (born 23 April 1975) is an Australian politician and medical doctor. Seidel was born in Kamen, a small town in the Ruhr Valley region of Germany, and undertook preliminary medical training in South Africa and Germany, before completing specialist general practitioner training in the United Kingdom. In 2007, he emigrated to Australia on a skilled migrant visa, and established a medical practice in Huonville, Tasmania in 2008. He was president of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) from 2016 to 2018. In 2020, Seidel nominated as a candidate for the Australian Labor Party at the 2020 election for the Tasmanian Legislative Council division of Huon. He was elected on 1 August 2020, defeating incumbent independent MLC Robert Armstrong. Tania Rattray
Tania Verene Rattray (born 28 March 1958) is an independent member of the Tasmanian Legislative Council (upper house) in the division of McIntyre. Rattray was educated at Winnaleah Area School and Scottsdale High School. Before becoming a full-time politician, she was an owner/operator of the Winnaleah Four Square Supermarket from 1988–1994.
