2022 Stretford And Urmston By-election
A by-election was held in the United Kingdom parliamentary constituency of Stretford and Urmston on 15 December 2022, following the appointment of sitting Labour MP Kate Green as Deputy Mayor of Greater Manchester. Green was appointed as Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead on 10 November, giving effect to her resignation as a member of Parliament. The by-election was won by Andrew Western, retaining the seat for Labour with an increased share of the vote. The turnout was 25.8%. This was the second by-election to be held during both the reign of King Charles III and the premiership of Rishi Sunak; it took place two weeks after a by-election in the City of Chester in nearby Cheshire. It was also the first by-election in Greater Manchester since the 2015 Oldham West and Royton by-election. Andrew Western
Andrew Howard Western (born 18 March 1985) is a British Labour Party politician who was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for Stretford and Urmston at the 2022 by-election. He had been the leader of Trafford Council since 2018, a post he vacated upon his election to parliament. Early life Western was born at Wythenshawe Hospital to Denise Western (née Firth) and Howard Western and grew up in Timperley. He had four sisters, and describes his upbringing as "modest", saying that "after my parents' divorce times were tough"; he benefited from the Education Maintenance Allowance and was the first member of his family to go to university. He attended the local grammar school, Altrincham Grammar School for Boys, before studying History and Politics at Sheffield University, graduating in 2006. 2015 Oldham West And Royton By-election
The Oldham West and Royton by-election was a UK parliamentary by-election held on 3 December 2015 in the constituency of Oldham West and Royton in Greater Manchester. This was the first by-election of the 56th UK Parliament. The by-election was caused by the death of the sitting Member of Parliament (MP) Michael Meacher on 21 October 2015; Meacher had been the Labour Party MP for the seat since its creation in 1997 and had represented its predecessor seat of Oldham West since 1970. A writ for the by-election was moved in Parliament on 2 November 2015, setting polling day as 3 December 2015. Flixton, Greater Manchester
Flixton is a suburb and electoral ward in the Metropolitan Borough of Trafford, Greater Manchester, England. The population of the ward at the 2011 census was 10,786. It lies six miles (9.7 km) southwest of Manchester city centre, in the historic county of Lancashire. Neolithic and Bronze Age artefacts have been found locally and the area may have been inhabited then. Medieval Flixton was a parish within the Hundred of Salford and manor of Flixton, first mentioned in the 12th century. The parish comprised isolated farmsteads and a manor house. Dumplington
Dumplington is an area of Urmston, Greater Manchester, England, which is dominated by the Trafford Centre shopping complex. Dumplington was one of several hamlets in the township of Barton-upon-Irwell, in the ancient ecclesiastical parish of Eccles in the hundred of Salford. Its name derives from the Old English ''dympel'' and ''ing'' and ''tun'' which means an enclosure by a pool. The hamlet lies six miles south west of Manchester city centre. Davyhulme is an area of Greater Manchester, England, historically in Lancashire. The population at the 2011 census was 19,634. Davyhulme Sewage Works The area is notable for Davyhulme Sewage Works, one of the largest wastewater treatment plants in Europe. Opened in 1894, the site is operated by United Utilities and serves a population of 1.2 million in and around the city of Manchester. Urmston
Urmston is a town in Trafford, Greater Manchester, England, which had a population of 41,825 at the 2011 Census. Historically in Lancashire, it is southwest of Manchester city centre. The southern boundary is the River Mersey, with Stretford lying to the east and Flixton to the west. Davyhulme lies to the north of the town centre. Urmston covers an area of 4,799 acres (19 km2). The town has early medieval origins, and until the arrival of the railway in 1873 was a small farming community. Stretford
Stretford is a market town in Trafford, Greater Manchester, England. It is situated on flat ground between the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal, south of Manchester city centre, south of Salford and north-east of Altrincham. Stretford borders Chorlton-cum-Hardy to the east, Moss Side and Whalley Range to the south-east, Hulme to the north-east, Urmston to the west, Salford to the north, and Sale to the south. Manchester Ship Canal
The Manchester Ship Canal is a inland waterway in the North West of England linking Manchester to the Irish Sea. Starting at the Mersey Estuary at Eastham, near Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, it generally follows the original routes of the rivers Mersey and Irwell through the historic counties of Cheshire and Lancashire. Several sets of locks lift vessels about to the canal's terminus in Manchester. Partington
Partington is a town and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Trafford, Greater Manchester, England, south-west of Manchester city centre. Within the boundaries of the historic county of Cheshire, it lies on the southern bank of the Manchester Ship Canal, opposite Cadishead on the northern bank. It has a population of 7,327.
