2022 South Dakota Attorney General Election
The 2022 South Dakota Attorney General election took place on November 8, 2022, to elect the next Attorney General of South Dakota. On June 21, 2022, former Republican Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg was convicted and removed from office for malfeasance of office. The State Senate further barred Ravnsborg from holding office in South Dakota. Republican Mark Vargo was appointed to fill the remainder of Ravnsborg's term and did not run for a full term. Marty Jackley, who previously held this office from 2009 until 2019, ran unopposed in the general election. Marty Jackley
Martin J. Jackley (born October 13, 1970) is an American attorney and politician who is currently serving as the Attorney General of South Dakota since 2023, having previously served from 2009 to 2019. He assumed office as Attorney General again in 2023 after winning the 2022 election unopposed. He previously served as the 39th United States Attorney for the District of South Dakota. He ran unsuccessfully for Governor of South Dakota in 2018, losing to Kristi Noem. Mark Vargo (politician)
Mark Alexander Vargo (born July 29, 1963) is an American lawyer and politician who served as the 32nd Attorney General of South Dakota. In June 2022, he was appointed by Governor Kristi Noem to fill the vacancy created by Jason Ravnsborg's impeachment and removal from office. He previously served as the State's Attorney of Pennington County, South Dakota. Early life Vargo was born in Stuttgart, West Germany, while his father was serving in the United States Army. He is the son of college professor Albert James Vargo and nurse Geraldine Jean (Klekotka) Vargo and was raised in West Germany, Michigan, and Kansas. He is a 1981 graduate of Kapaun Mt. Jason Ravnsborg
Jason Richard Ravnsborg (born April 12, 1976) is an American attorney and politician. A Republican, he served as Attorney General of South Dakota from 2019 until his removal in 2022. Ravnsborg ran for the U.S. Senate in 2014, losing in the Republican primary to former Governor Mike Rounds, who won the general election. Ravnsborg is an U.S. Army Reserve officer and combat veteran who has served tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his service in Iraq. Before becoming attorney general, Ravnsborg was a lawyer in private practice and deputy state's attorney for Union County. Brule County
Brule County is a county in the U.S. state of South Dakota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 5,247. Its county seat is Chamberlain. History Brule County was created on January 14, 1875, of territory partitioned from Charles Mix County. Its governing structure was also created at that time. However, in May 1875, Brule County was withdrawn from settlement, by order of US President Grant. This order was later annulled, and the organization of Brule County governing structure was completed in September 1879. On March 9, 1883, the area of Brule County was slightly increased by an addition of former Buffalo County lands. Kristi Lynn Noem (; née Arnold; born November 30, 1971) is an American politician serving as the 33rd governor of South Dakota since 2019.
