The 2022 Sefton Metropolitan Borough Council election took place on 5 May 2022 to elect members of Sefton Council. This was on the same day as other local elections. 21 of the 66 seats were up for election, with 1 ward (St. Oswald) being uncontested. Background From its creation in 1974 to the 1986 election, Sefton Council was under Conservative control. It was then under no overall control until the 2012 election, when Labour won their first majority on the council. In the 2021 election, Labour polled 46.6% and gained 6 seats, the Conservatives polled 26.0% for a gain of 2 seats, The Liberal Democrats took 14.1% and lost 5 seats, Formby Residents Action Group polled 2.2% and did not make any gains, and independents lost their 3 seats on the council. Sefton Council
Sefton Council is the governing body for the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton in the county of Merseyside, north-western England. The council was under no overall control from the 1980s until 2012 when the Labour Party took control. It is a constituent council of Liverpool City Region Combined Authority. History Sefton Council was created by the local government reorganisation of 1974, which created a two-tier system of government in the United Kingdom. It was a metropolitan district of the metropolitan county of Merseyside. Until 1986, the five metropolitan borough councils of Merseyside shared power with the central Merseyside County Council, but this was later abolished and its functions devolved solely to its districts. 2022 United Kingdom Local Elections
Local elections in the United Kingdom took place on 5 May 2022. These included elections for all London borough councils, for all local authorities in Wales and Scotland. Most seats in England were last up for election in 2018 and in Scotland and Wales in 2017. The elections coincided with the 2022 Northern Ireland Assembly election. In 91 cases, most of them in Wales, council seats were uncontested, each having only one candidate. Three seats in Scotland remained unfilled as no one nominated to fill them. 2012 Sefton Metropolitan Borough Council Election
The 2012 Sefton Metropolitan Borough Council election took on 3 May 2012 to elect members of Sefton Metropolitan Borough Council in England, as part of the 2012 United Kingdom local elections. 22 seats, representing one third of the total Council membership, were up for election in single-member wards. Ten - nearly half - of the members elected were newcomers to the Council; five of these defeated sitting Councillors seeking re-election, whilst in the other five wards, the incumbent retired. Two incumbents stood under different labels to those they were elected under in 2008; both were defeated in their wards. The election resulted in a landslide for the Labour Party, which won 48% of the popular vote and 15 of the seats up for election - more than double the seven it went into the election with. 2018 Sefton Metropolitan Borough Council Election
The 2018 Sefton Metropolitan Borough Council election took place on 3 May 2018 to elect members of Sefton Metropolitan Borough Council in England. It was held on the same day as other local elections. Labour retained control of the council with an increased majority, winning an additional three seats and winning their first seats in Southport.
