The 2022 Rally de Portugal (also known as the Vodafone Rally de Portugal 2022) was a motor racing event for rally cars held over four days between 19 and 22 May 2022. It marked the fifty-fifth running of the Rally de Portugal. The event was the fourth round of the 2022 World Rally Championship, World Rally Championship-2 and World Rally Championship-3. The 2022 event was based in Matosinhos in the Porto District and was contested over twenty-one special stages covering a total competitive distance of . Elfyn Evans and Scott Martin were the defending rally winners. Their team, Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT, were the defending manufacturers' winners. Esapekka Lappi and Janne Ferm were the defending rally winners in the WRC-2 category. The 2022 FIA World Rally Championship is the fiftieth season of the World Rally Championship, an auto racing competition recognised by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) as the highest class of international rallying. Teams and crews compete for the World Rally Championships for Drivers, Co-drivers, Manufacturers and Teams. Crews are free to compete in cars complying with Groups Rally1 to Rally5 regulations; however, only manufacturers competing with Rally1 cars homologated under radically new regulations are eligible to score points in the manufacturers' championship. The championship is set to begin in January 2022 with the Rallye Monte-Carlo and is expected to conclude in November 2022 with Rally Japan. Maciej Szczepaniak
Maciej Szczepaniak, born 16 December 1973 in Wałbrzych, is a Polish rally co-driver. In 2021 he became the WRC3 Co-Driver Champion as regular accomplice to driver Kajetan Kajetanowicz, who was himself beaten to the driver's championship title by Yohan Rossel. He has over one hundred WRC starts to his name in a career spanning over 25 years. Career Szczepaniak started rallying in 1995 as a rally driver in his native Poland although has not competed as a driver since 1997. In 1998 he began his career as co-driver to Tomasz Kuchar on Polish national events enjoying some good results. Kajetan Kajetanowicz (born 5 March 1979) is a Polish rally driver. Titles He is a Four time Poland Rally Champion (2010 2011, 2012, 2013). In 2012 he became champion in the Central European Zone Rally Championship. Janne Ferm
Janne Ferm (born 29 August 1980) is a Finnish rally co-driver. He is currently teamed with Esapekka Lappi and is competing for Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT in the World Rally Championship. Rally career Janne Ferm began his rally career in 2007, co-driving for several drivers. In 2010, he firmed the partnership with Esapekka Lappi. In the 2011 Rally Finland, he made his WRC debut, where the crew drove in a Citroën C2 R2 Max. Esapekka Lappi (born 17 January 1991) is a Finnish rally driver. He is the 2012 Finnish Rally Champion, 2014 European Rally Champion and the 2016 WRC-2 Champion. Scott Martin (born 6 November 1981) is a British rallying co-driver who competes in the FIA World Rally Championship. Biography Martin began his rallying career in 2001 co-driving at a national level in the UK. With Matthew Wilson in 2004, he finished as second outright co-driver in the British Rally Championship (BRC) in the Ford Focus RS. After the 2004 season, Martin was accepted into the MSA British Rally Elite Scheme, a specialist training scheme for young British rally drivers. Special Stage (rallying)
A special stage (SS) is a section of closed road at a stage rallying event used for timed speed tests. Racers attempt to complete the stage in the shortest time. A race on a special stage is coordinated such that each competing racer begins after a set interval, to reduce the chance of impedance by other competitors. The World Rally Championship (abbreviated as WRC) is the highest level of global competition in the motorsport discipline of rallying, owned and governed by the FIA. There are separate championships for drivers, co-drivers, manufacturers and teams. The series currently consists of 13 three to four-day rally events driven on surfaces ranging from gravel and tarmac to snow and ice. Each rally is usually split into 15–25 special stages which are run against the clock on up to 350 kilometres of closed roads.
