2022 Powys County Council Election
The 2022 Powys Council election took place on 5 May 2022 to elect 68 members to Powys County Council. On the same day, elections were held to the other 21 local authorities and to community councils in Wales as part of the 2022 Welsh local elections. The previous Powys all-council election took place 2017 Powys County Council election, in May 2017 and future elections will take place every five years. Powys County Council
Powys County Council ( cy, Cyngor Sir Powys) is the local authority for Powys, one of the administrative areas of Wales. The County Hall is in Llandrindod Wells. History The county of Powys was created on 1 April 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972, covering the area of the three administrative counties of Brecknockshire, Montgomeryshire, and Radnorshire, which were abolished at the same time. From 1974 until 1996 there were two principal tiers of local government, with Powys County Council as the upper tier authority and three district councils below it, each of which corresponded to one of the pre-1974 counties: Brecknock Borough Council, Montgomeryshire District Council, and Radnorshire District Council. The three districts were abolished under the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994, with Powys County Council becoming a unitary authority with effect from 1 April 1996, taking on the functions formerly performed by the district councils. William Powell (Liberal Democrat Politician)
William "Bill" Powell is a Welsh Liberal Democrat politician. He has been a Powys County Councillor since 2004, and was a member of the Member of the Welsh Assembly (AM) for the Mid and West Wales Region from 2011 to 2016. Background Powell attended Talgarth Community Primary School and Gwernyfed High School, gaining a scholarship to read Modern Languages (French and German) at Pembroke College, Oxford. He is a qualified teacher and has taught French and German at a number of schools in Wales and the Marches. Latterly, William was Head of German at Hereford Sixth Form College, where he was also the European Officer. In 1998 he was awarded County Winner of the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society Agri-Environment Award. Powell has consistently attended the annual Cilmeri commemoration to mark the last battle of Prince Llywelyn. Glasbury (electoral Ward)
Glasbury is the name of an electoral wards in central Powys, Wales. It covers the community of Glasbury (which contains part of the village of the same name) as well as the neighbouring communities of Clyro and Painscastle. The ward elects a county councillor to Powys County Council. According to the 2011 census the population of the ward was 2,299. County councillors Independent councillor Margaret Morris represented the ward on Powys County Council until May 2012, when the seat was won by Christopher Davies for the Welsh Conservative Party. Welshpool Llanerchyddol
Welshpool Llanerchyddol (usually referred to as Llanerchyddol) is the name of an electoral ward in the town of Welshpool, Powys, Wales. It elects a councillor to Powys County Council. Description The Llanerchyddol ward covers the area of the town to the west of Welshpool town centre and the smaller rural settlements of Llanerchydol, Groespluan and Frochas. Llanerchyddol is divided from the Welshpool Castle ward by the A458 road, is bordered to the east by Welshpool Gungrog and to the north and west by Guilsfield. The ward elected two councillors to Montgomeryshire District Council and Powys County Council, but since the May 1999 election it has elected one county councillor to Powys County Council. Machynlleth
Machynlleth () is a market town, community and electoral ward in Powys, Wales and within the historic boundaries of Montgomeryshire. It is in the Dyfi Valley at the intersection of the A487 and the A489 roads. At the 2001 Census it had a population of 2,147, rising to 2,235 in 2011. It is sometimes referred to colloquially as ''Mach''. Machynlleth was the seat of Owain Glyndŵr's Welsh Parliament in 1404,''The Welsh Academy Encyclopaedia of Wales''. Llanidloes
Llanidloes () is a town and community on the A470 and B4518 roads in Powys, within the historic county boundaries of Montgomeryshire ( cy, Sir Drefaldwyn), Wales. The population in 2011 was 2,929, of whom 15% could speak Welsh. It is the third largest settlement in Montgomeryshire, after Newtown and Welshpool. It is the first town on the River Severn ( cy, Afon Hafren), counting from the source. The town's Member of Parliament is the Conservative Craig Williams (MP since 2019) and its Member of the Senedd is Conservative Russell George (MS since 2011). Surroundings The town is close to the large dam and reservoir Llyn Clywedog. There is a scenic mountain road connecting Machynlleth and Llanidloes. Llanfyllin
Llanfyllin ( – ) is a market town, community and electoral ward in a sparsely populated area in Montgomeryshire, Powys, Wales. Llanfyllin's community population in 2011 was 1,532, of whom 34.1% could speak Welsh. Llanfyllin means ''church or parish'' (llan) ''of St Myllin'' ('m' frequently mutates to 'f' in Welsh). The community includes the tiny settlements of Bodfach, Ty Crwyn, Abernaint and several farms. Llanbrynmair
Llanbrynmair () is a village, community and electoral ward in Montgomeryshire, Powys, on the A470 road between Caersws and Machynlleth. Llanbrynmair, in area, is the second largest in Powys. In 2011, it had a population of 920. Description The community includes several hamlets: Talerddig, Dolfach, Bont-Dolgadfan, Pandy, Cringoed, Dylife and Pennant. The original centre is at Llan, on the road to Llanidloes, where the local parish church of St Mary is located. Kerry, Powys
Kerry ( cy, Ceri) is a village and geographically large community in Montgomeryshire, Powys, Wales. The village lies on the A489 road southeast of Newtown and possesses two pubs — the Herbert Arms and the Kerry Lamb — a village hall, a bowling green, a post office, a primary school and a hairdresser. Churchstoke
Churchstoke or Church Stoke ( cy, Yr Ystog) is a village, community and electoral ward in Montgomeryshire, Powys, Wales. Located in the southeast of the Vale of Montgomery, it is overlooked by Todleth Hill, Roundton Hill and Corndon Hill. The rivers Caebitra and Camlad have their confluence just outside the village.
